GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone welcomed Lourdes to the CU Soccer pitch on Friday night for the annual Night of Nets match. After a scoreless regulation, the Gray Wolves ultimately came out victorious by scoring the lone goal with just over five minutes to play in the second overtime. The loss sets Cornerstone back to 1-12-1 overall, 0-7 WHAC. Conference play continues on Wednesday evening when Michigan-Dearborn comes to town.
The Highlights:
- Cornerstone nearly took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Brennan Joseph sent a through ball up the middle to an accelerating Christian Galloway. He was able to get a shot away but the attempt went high.
- Abe House almost recorded his first collegiate goal with just under ten minutes to play off a corner kick from Galloway. The header attempt was deflected over the crossbar by the Lourdes goalkeeper.
- Lourdes had three corner kicks in the first two minutes of the second half, but failed to get any legitimate scoring chances off of them.
- With 35 minutes to play in the first half, Welamaza Magwentshu shot what appeared to be the first goal of the game, but the tally was called back due to offsides.
- With less than ten seconds remaining in regulation, David Dwumfour Poku was able to get a head on a bouncing ball as the Lourdes goalkeeper attempted to grab it. The ball trickled wide, sending the teams to a golden goal overtime session.
- After a scoreless first overtime session, the Gray Wolves capitalized with just over five minutes to go in the second OT frame to end the game.
