Aquinas stifles Men's Soccer in cross-town showdown

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite the rainy weather conditions, Cornerstone and Aquinas were able to play their soccer match on Wednesday evening on the AQ Turf Field. The Saints tallied one goal in each half to earn a 2-0 shutout of the Golden Eagles. The loss drops Cornerstone's record to 1-7-1, 0-2 WHAC heading into Saturday's home contest against Indiana Tech.

The Highlights:
  • Aquinas recorded five goals and four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of action before finally breaking the ice off a set piece in the 23rd minute.
  • The Saints outshot the Golden Eagles 11-2 in the first half.
  • Cornerstone was able to defend two consecutive Aquinas corner kicks early in the second half to keep the deficit at one.
  • In the 72nd minute, the Saints doubled their lead when a wide open AQ forward placed one perfectly past a diving Mitchell.
  • Christian Galloway nearly found the back of the net in the 82nd minute when a sharp angle shot was deflected away by the Aquinas goaltender. That play eventually led to a CU corner kick, which was promptly cleared away by the Saints to end the final threat from the Golden Eagles.
