GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles fell to .500 in conference play at 7-7 overall with a 3-1 loss vs. Madonna. Cornerstone won the first set 25-23, but would drop the next three 27-29, 15-25, 13-25 to move to 10-15, 7-7 WHAC on the year. The team will continue the final regular season home stand vs. Rochester on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Game Recap – MU – 3 CU – 1 (25-23, 27-29, 15-25, 13-25)
- Some early attacking errors by the Golden Eagles helped Madonna get out to an 8-3 lead in set one.
- Back-to-back kills by Olivia Keelean helped CU respond and tie set one at nine.
- After the set was tied at 14 all, Cornerstone went on a 3-0 run on a pair of kills from Bailey Cummings to force Madonna into a timeout.
- Cornerstone held on to take set one 25-23 behind a set clinching kill from Bailey Cummings.
- The WHAC's kill leader Jodie Kelly for Madonna started to find a rhythm early in set two, recording four kills in the first 15 points to get the Crusaders out to an 8-7 lead.
- After trailing 12-9, CU rattled off a 7-2 run that saw a huge kill from Jackie Stanko and block from Kayla Clark and Alexis Angus. Madonna called timeout at 16-14.
- Madonna responded to take a 19-17 lead and force CU into a timeout.
- CU responded to tie the set, but the Crusaders won the marathon 29-27 to even the match at one.
- The Crusaders took the momentum into set three, taking an early 6-2 lead on a pair of kills from Jodie Kelly and a pair of errors from Cornerstone.
- CU cut the deficit to just three at 12-9, but Madonna followed that up with a 5-0 run to go on top 17-9.
- Madonna went on to win set three 25-15 and take a 2-1 lead on the match.
- The struggles continued in set four for the Golden Eagles being forced into an early timeout after falling behind 11-6.
- Alexis Angus cut the deficit to just three with a kill, but Madonna responded with a 6-0 run to lead 19-10 and force CU into their final timeout.
- Madonna continued the run after the timeout to win set four 25-13 and take the match 3-1.
