No. 12 Men’s Basketball survives WHAC Opener 67-60 over Lawrence Tech

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Golden Eagles won their third straight game in a tough defensive struggle at Lawrence Tech during the WHAC opener. Cornerstone held on in the final few minutes to win 67-60 over the Blue Devils and improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. CU will continue WHAC play at receiving votes Siena Heights on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. 
 
What you need to know? 
  • Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as a total of eight points were scored in the first 3:45 of the game. 
  • Jonny Strube hit the first Golden Eagle three of the game six minutes into the game, to get out to a 13-8 lead. 
  • Lawrence Tech responded with a 9-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. 
  • Christian Rodriguez capped off an 8-2 run as to respond and give CU a 23-19 lead with 5:14 to play in the first half. 
  • Gabe Meriwether and Tyler Baker each hit jumpers in the final minute to give Cornerstone a 34-26 lead at the half. 
  • CU held Lawrence Tech to 30% from the field in the first half. 
  • Cornerstone was able to maintain an eight-point lead through the first four minutes of a second half. 
  • Lawrence Tech used a big run to regain the lead 45-43 with 10:29 to play on a layup from Isaiah Cumberland. 
  • Tyler Baker hit a huge three to help Cornerstone regain the lead 50-47. 
  • Cornerstone did not give up the lead the remainder of the game, as Christian Rodriguez hit a layup and Carter Nyp hit three free throws to ice the game and give the Golden Eagles the 67-60 road victory.

  • Tyler Baker (19) and Kyle Hayes (18) were the only two Golden Eagles in double figures during the game. 
  • CU struggled from the three-point line, going just 4-17 from deep. 
  • Carter Nyp recorded 12 of Cornerstone's 38 rebounds on the game. 
  • The Golden Eagles held Lawrence Tech to just 34.9% from the field.
