No. 12 Men’s Basketball downs No. 23 IIT in defensive slugfest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 12 Golden Eagles stayed perfect in conference play with a slugfest defensive battle victory on Saturday afternoon vs. No. 23 Indiana Tech. CU led by as many as 20 in the first half, but Indiana Tech came roaring back in the second half to take the lead before Cornerstone sealed the eight-point win 63-55. CU is now 7-2, 3-0 WHAC on the year as they will travel to Lourdes on Tuesday for their next game at 8 p.m. 
 
What you need to know? 
  • Cornerstone came out of the gate firing scoring the first eight points behind a pair of buckets from Tyler Baker
  • Indiana Tech scored their first points 4:04 into the game, but that would be one of very few buckets in the first half, as they totaled just six with 3:28 remaining in the half. 
  • CU held a lead as large as 20 in the first half, including a 26-6 margin. 
  • The Warriors finally found their stride, scoring 13 points in the final 3:28 of the first half to cut the Golden Eagle lead to just 11 at the break, 30-19. 
  • Gabe Meriwether led the Golden Eagles with nine first half points, while the CU defense held the Warriors to just 21.9% from the field. 
  • Indiana Tech dominated the early part of the second half, using a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game 33-32 with 14:39 to play. 
  • Indiana Tech would maintain the lead for a few minutes before CU fired back with a Cory Ainsworth layup and Tyler Baker three to take the game back at 40-37. 
  • Christian Rodriguez then hit a bucket to increase the Cornerstone lead back to nine at 46-37. 
  • Indiana Tech would only be able to cut it to as close as four in the final eight minutes of the game as clutch free throw shooting by Tyler Baker helped CU seal the 63-55 win over No. 23 Indiana Tech.

  • Tyler Baker led the team with 19 points including a 7-9 mark at the free throw line. 
  • Gabe Meriwether and Cory Ainsworth each scored 11 on the day. Ainsworth's 11 is his fourth double-figure of the game. 
  • Kyle Hayes led the team with eight rebounds. 
  • Cornerstone scored 21 points off turnovers in the win.

Cornerstone hits the road for one final WHAC game before Thanksgiving as they will take on Lourdes at 8 p.m. in Sylvania, Ohio.
