GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 12 Golden Eagles are set for a busy Thanksgiving week as they will travel to Lourdes for a WHAC game before returning home on November 29-30 to host the annual Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame (GRSHOF) Basketball Classic. Games for the classic will take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day with tickets being $10 for adults and $6 for kids under the age of 16. Win Streak to Five
The Golden Eagles improved their win streak to five with a pair of close WHAC wins over receiving votes Siena Heights and No. 23 Indiana Tech. CU came back from a halftime deficit at Siena Heights to win 75-74 and then defeated Indiana Tech in the WHAC home opener 63-55 in a defensive slugfest. Cornerstone is now 7-2, 3-0 WHAC on the year as they get set to travel to Lourdes and host the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament this weekend.
Crod's Career High
Junior point guard
Christian Rodriguez is now just 63 points away from 1,000 after a career high 32 points at Siena Heights to go along with a career high seven rebounds. Rodriguez is set to become the 43rd Golden Eagle in program history to record 1,000+ points in his career.
Second Half Prowess
The Golden Eagles have trailed at the half in six of their nine games this season, yet have posted a 4-2 record in those games. CU is 4-1 when trailing at the half on the road this season. The team has also been dominant in close games this season, going 6-0 in games decided by under 10 points.
Defending the Rim
Cory Ainsworth and
Kyle Hayes have been dominant rim protectors in the early season, each ranking in the top 15 in total blocks within NAIA DII. Ainsworth recorded a career high six blocks vs. Indiana Tech on Saturday to bring his total to 19 on the year. As a team CU is averaging an NAIA DII fourth best 5.3 blocks per game.
GRSHOF Classic History
The Golden Eagles have been named the GRSHOF Classic Champion seven times since it began in 1996 and have won three of the past four. Cornerstone is 25-19 all-time in the classic.
Scouting Lourdes
The 4-3, 2-1 WHAC Gray Wolves are powered by a pair of juniors and a sophomore as former WHAC Player of the Week Clif Snow leads the team with 19.7 PPG. Snow ranks fifth in the WHAC in points per game this season and is also second on his team with 6.9 rebounds per game and 20 assists. Despite just a 4-3 record, all three of the Gray Wolves losses have been by less than 10 points and all to NAIA DII Top 25 opponents.
Scouting Hope/Calvin
Hope and Calvin are both just getting the 2019-20 season started as Hope is 3-0 and Calvin is 1-2 in the early season. Hope has four players averaging double figures in the first three games led by junior Preston Granger at 19.0 PPG. Calvin has three players averaging double figures, led by senior Derrick DeVries at 25.7 PPG.
