Lawrence Tech scores 51 second half points to upset No. 8 Men’s Basketball

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – After leading by as many as 17 in the second half, the Golden Eagles would fall on the road at Lawrence Tech 82-73 thanks to 51 second half points from the Blue Devils. With the loss, CU enters the last game of the regular season still needing a win to clinch the WHAC regular season title outright. Cornerstone is now 22-7, 15-4 WHAC as they will travel to Siena Heights on Saturday at 5 p.m. to end the regular season. 

What you need to know
  • Each team would hit a pair of threes to start the game leaving it tied 6-6 after four minutes of play. 
  • LTU would then go on a 8-2 run to take a 14-8 lead. 
  • The three-point shooting of Christian Rodriguez and Gabe Meriwether would help CU rebound from the deficit to get on top 27-24 with 6:45 left in the first half. 
  • Christian Rodriguez would hit a last second bucket to increase the Cornerstone lead to its largest at 10 going into the half. 
  • CU would start the second half strong with a 7-2 run that included a Jonny Strube jumper that gave CU a 15-point lead. 
  • LTU would respond with a 15-0 run and eventually would cut the CU lead to just one with 10:45 remaining.  
  • CU would increase the lead back to five, but LTU would pour it on in the final five minutes going on a 26-12 run to end the game to upset the no. 8 Golden Eagles 82-73. 
 
By the Numbers
17/8 – Sophomore Gabe Meriwether would record a career high 17 points and tie a career high with eight rebounds, in a career high 36 minutes played. 
26.3% - CU was held to just 10-38 in the second half for a 26.3 percentage. 
23 – Christian Rodriguez led all CU scorers with a game high 23 points. 
8/3 – Jonny Strube went for eight points and three rebounds in his first career start for CU.
1 – CU still needs a win in their final regular season game to clinch the WHAC regular season title outright. 

What's Next? 
Cornerstone will conclude the regular season at Siena Heights on Saturday at 5 p.m. before WHAC Tournament play begins next week.
