Baseball swept by Taylor in makeup double-header

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Golden Eagles would lose another pair of close games, falling 6-5 in game one and 3-1 in game two against Taylor University in Westfield, Indiana. In game one Taylor would hold a 6-1 lead early and Cornerstone would slowly chip away but would fall just short losing by a run. In game two, CU saw great pitching but could not get the offense going being one hit to fall 3-1. Cornerstone is now 0-4 to begin the year as they will head to Martin Methodist College in Tennessee next weekend for four games. 

Game One
  • Taylor would get on the board first, scoring four runs in the second inning with two on an RBI double and then two more on an error by Collin Young and a sacrifice fly. 
  • Cornerstone would get one back in the third on a bases loaded Joe Corsten walk to cut the deficit to 4-1. 
  • Another sacrifice fly and then an error by Gabe Zeiger would allow Taylor to get two more runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to five runs. 
  • Jon Martin would come in and pitch the final 4.1 innings and would shut down the Trojan offense the rest of the way. 
  • CU would begin to chip away at the deficit with two runs in the sixth on a Gabe Zeiger run that scored via a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Krupansky that scored Cain Ruiz
  • Trevor Bastien would knock in an RBI single in the seventh to cut the deficit to 6-4. 
  • In the top of the ninth CU would threaten again, but would only be able to score one run on another Taylor wild pitch, resulting in a 6-5 loss to the Trojans. 
 
Game Two
  • Taylor would get to starter Noah Reed quickly scoring two runs in the first on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. 
  • Noah Reed would then dominate, striking out seven batters in 4.2 innings pitched. 
  • Cornerstone would score there only run of the game in the fifth on a wild pitch that would score Kyle DeSchryver
  • The relief pitcher Chandler McKinney would pitch well outside one run he gave up, as the Trojans increased their lead back to two on an RBI double to center field. 
  • Alan LaBov would come in and pitch the final 1.2 innings holding the Trojans scoreless, but the CU offense would be held to just one hit to fall 3-1. 
 
By the Numbers 
18 – The Golden Eagles pitching staff would combine for 18 strikeouts today. 
3 – Aaron Krupansky and Trevor Bastien would record the best offensive days for CU with three hits and an RBI all coming in game one. 
8 – The Cornerstone batters drew eight walks in each game for a total of 16 on the day. 

What's Next? 
Cornerstone will have just over a week off of game action before heading to Pulaski, Tennessee for four games against Martin Methodist College.
