No. 10 Men’s Basketball set to host UM-Dearborn in WHAC Quarterfinal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The WHAC regular season champion Golden Eagles are set to begin WHAC Tournament play now with a quarterfinal matchup against the eight seed UM-Dearborn Wolverines. CU and UM-Dearborn split their season series, each winning at home this season. The Wolverines come into the tournament as the defending WHAC Tournament champions, defeating Rochester in the finals last year to earn a berth to the NAIA DII National Tournament. Thursday's game will tip at 7:30 p.m. with live video/audio/stats at cugoldeneagles.com/watch.

Opponent: UM-Dearborn
Date: Thursday, February 21
Time: 7:30 p.m. EST
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich. (Mol Arena)
Internet Coverage: Live Video/Audio/Stats

WHAC Tournament Outlook
After two tie breakers had to be put into effect the WHAC Tournament seedings are set in place. CU is the number one overall seed followed by Madonna, Indiana Tech, Siena Heights, Rochester, Lourdes, Lawrence Tech, and UM-Dearborn respectively. If Cornerstone can win on Thursday, they would host the winner of the four seed Siena Heights and the five seed Rochester on Saturday at 3 p.m.

WHAC Tournament History
The Wolverines have served as the most consistently seen opponent for the Golden Eagles in recent years as this will be the third straight year the two teams will meet up in WHAC Tournament action. Each of the previous two seasons the team met in the semifinals, splitting those games with CU winning two years ago and UM-Dearborn winning last season. Head coach Kim Elders and CU have won three of the last five WHAC Tournament titles.

Vander Sluis Rebounding Record
Senior Sam Vander Sluis has etched his name in yet another program rebounding record becoming the new all-time leader for rebounds in a season, currently holding 465 boards in 2018-19. Vander Sluis has now tied the single game record, and broken the season and career records for rebounding in CU program history.

Career Highs/Double-Double
Sophomore Gabe Meriwether would post an outstanding week with a  career high 17 points at Lawrence Tech only to break that with a new career high 23 points at Siena Heights on Saturday. Meriwether would hit a career high 15 free throws at SHU, helping Cornerstone to a season high 31 made free throws on Saturday. Freshman Carter Nyp would record his first career double-double on Saturday with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Scouting UM-Dearborn
A very solid defensive UM-Dearborn team is set to return to Mol Arena where they fell 87-68 just a few weeks ago. The Wolverines only score 69.4 points per game, but they also hold opponents to an NAIA DII 25th best 72.8 points per game. Offensively, five Wolverines average 10+ points per game including a team high 12.2 PPG from Jason Gigliotti. Despite sporting an 11-19, 8-12 WHAC record, UM-Dearborn split the season series with CU, has won two of the last three matchups, and are the defending WHAC Tournament Champions.
