Baseball drops pair of pitching duels to open the 2019 season

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Golden Eagles dropped a pair of tough pitching duels on a chilly and wet day in Westfield, Indiana falling 3-1 and 3-0 to Taylor University. CU would total six hits on the day four in the first game and two in the second in the neutral site affair. Cornerstone now begins the season 0-2 as they look to return to Westfield on Saturday for two more games against Taylor weather permitting.

Game One
  • CU had a great opportunity to get on the board first, loading the basses in the top of the third with no outs but three consecutive strikeouts by the Golden Eagles would end the threat.
  • After a strong first two innings on the mound by Daniel Abbgy, Taylor would get on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Aaron Krupansky would hit an RBI single to score Cain Ruiz and cut the deficit to one in the fourth.
  • Taylor would add an insurance run in the eighth off the relief pitcher Alan LaBov to increase the lead back to two.
  • After a Dustin DeBeau pinch hit single in the seventh, CU would strikeout three consecutive times to end the game and fall 3-1.

Game Two
  • Chandler McKinney would pitch a great two first innings before Taylor would record an RBI single to go up 1-0.
  • Jon Martin would come in to begin the fourth inning and would struggle hitting a batter with the bases loaded to give Taylor a 2-0 lead.
  • Taylor would add one more run in the fifth on an RBI single to go up 3-0.
  • The Trojans starter Justin Pettit would pitch five innings allowing just one hit to the Golden Eagles.
  • Luke Carlson would come in and earn the save with two innings of work allowing just one hit to give TU the 3-0 win.
