Baseball rebounds with 7-6 win at Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After Davenport scored a run in the ninth to win 7-6 yesterday, Cornerstone returned the favor with a Joe Corsten sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth that gave the Golden Eagles a 7-6 win on the road this afternoon.  With the win, CU improves to 7-12 on the year as they will now get set to begin conference action in their home opener on Friday, March 22 against Madonna.

Game Highlights
  • Davenport scored first in this one with a Jake Bozzo sacrifice fly in the second inning. Starting pitcher Jon Martin however did an excellent job limiting the damage holding DU to just one run in the inning.
  • CU quickly responded in the top of the third inning scoring three runs with a pair of RBI singles from Jarod Burton and Joe Corsten as well as a bases loaded groundout by Brandon Hepp to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Jon Martin's day ended after three innings on the mound and Brett Shure came in for relief. DU got to Shure scoring four runs in the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead.
  • A Dustin DeBeau single cut the CU deficit back to one as Joe Corsten came home to make the score 5-4.
  • Joe Corsten then recorded his biggest at bat of the day in the top of the seventh with a two RBI double that gave Cornerstone the lead back at 6-5.
  • The new reliever Jared Riley pitched a strong 1.1 innings but he would give up a run on a Davenport groundout that tied the game at 6-6.
  • Joe Corsten continued to come up clutch with yet another RBI in the top of the ninth that gave the Golden Eagles the lead, this time with a sacrifice fly to score Brandon Hepp
  • After recording the final out of the final out of the eighth, senior Noah Reed returned for the ninth to get the final three outs and record his first win of the season, 7-6 at Davenport.
