High powered offense leads Baseball to sweep of Cleary

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles offense exploded for 35 hits on the day, with a program record 24 in game one to earn 17-5 and 9-1 victories vs. Cleary on Friday afternoon. With the wins, CU is now 10-15, 3-3 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will conclude a six-game home stand with a conference double-header vs. Lawrence Tech starting at 1 p.m. Stay tuned to cugoldeneagles.com for potential schedule changes due to weather conditions. 

Game One
  • The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start offensively recording six consecutive hits to start the game and scoring three runs. Jarod Burton highlighted the scoring with a double that brought home Chase Mitchell and Aaron Krupansky that helped CU get out to a 3-0 lead. 
  • The CU offense scored a single inning season high nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 12-0. A two RBI double by Aaron Krupansky highlighted the scoring as it helped him to become the first Golden Eagle in program history to achieve 100 career RBI. 
  • Noah Reed continued his domination through five innings, allowing no runs and just one hit while recording six strikeouts. 
  • Four more runs scored in the bottom of fifth inning highlighted by a Joe Corsten RBI double that scored the pinch hitter Cain Ruiz. Cornerstone would hold a 16-0 lead after five innings of play. 
  • CU added one more run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to left that scored Cain Ruiz and make the score 17-0. 
  • After a couple of Cornerstone errors in the top of the seventh, Cleary found the scoreboard scoring five runs on Noah Reed and forcing him to exit two outs shy of a complete game. Jeremy Praski came in for his first varsity appearance to record the final two outs and give the Golden Eagles a 17-5 win. 
 

Game Two 
  • An Aaron Krupansky single and a pair of walks drawn by Jarod Burton and Brandon Hepp loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Bastien brought home Krupansky on a groundout to lead 1-0. 
  • Collin Young continued the strong pitching performance for the Golden Eagles on the day holding Cleary to no runs and two hits through the first three innings. 
  • After a Cleary error and a pair of singles from Trevor Bastien and Gabe Zeiger in the bottom of the fourth inning, Joe Corsten recorded a single to center field that brought home Brandon Hepp to bring the score to 2-0. 
  • A wild pitch later in the fourth inning allowed Trevor Bastien to score giving the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Cornerstone offense continued to have success scoring three more in the sixth with a two RBI double from Joe Corsten followed by an RBI single from Austin Hurt
  • Gabe Zeiger capped off the scoring with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 9-0. 
  • Collin Young left after seven scoreless innings on the mound, striking out eight batters and allowing seven hits. 
  • Cleary got their first and only run of the game after an error by reliever Alan Labov to make the score 9-1.
  • Brett Shure pitched the final inning for CU and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to give CU the 9-1 win. 
 
By the Numbers 
 24 – CU recorded a program record 24 hits in the game one 17-5 win over Cleary. 
 
3 – Aaron Krupansky had three RBI on the day improving his career total to 101 to become the first player in program history with 100 career RBI. 
 
5 – CU had five players on the day with a three or more hits in a single game. 
 
15.0 – In his last two starts, Collin Young has gone a total of 15 innings without giving up a run while recording 17 strikeouts
 
35-13 – Cornerstone outhit Indiana Tech 35 to 13 on the day.
