Baseball earns split in games affected by power outage

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles earned a split in their final two games of a six-game home stand, winning 7-3 in game one and falling 6-5 (five innings) in game two. Roughly 30 minutes before game time, Cornerstone University lost power at multiple buildings across campus including De Witt field causing game two to be called early due to darkness. With the split, the Golden Eagles are now 11-16, 4-4 WHAC on the year as they get set to travel to cross-town rival Aquinas on Friday starting at 2 p.m.

Game One
  • Lawrence Tech got on the scoreboard first in game one, scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single from Brian Corbet that scored Harry Storch.
  • CU responded in the bottom of the second after Austin Hurt crushed a double to the left center gap that scored Trenton Gilman and Joe Corsten. Hurt would be out on the play trying to stretch the double into a triple but he helped give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
  • Lawrence Tech tied the game in the top of the third at two after an error by the Golden Eagles.
  • Cornerstone added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth and sixth inning, scoring on a Jarod Burton RBI double and an Aaron Krupansky RBI single to lead 4-2.
  • Trenton Gilman added another run for the Golden Eagles with an RBI single to center field that scored Gabe Zeiger and made it 5-2.
  • LTU scored a run back in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • After Cornerstone loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, Trenton Gilman recorded yet another key at bat with a two RBI single that brought the score to 7-3.
  • After a strong seven inning performance from the starter Chandler McKinney, Noah Reed pitched the final two innings to earn the save and help the Golden Eagles to a 7-3 victory.

Game Two
  • Daniel Abbgy got the start in game two and held LTU scoreless through the first two innings.
  • The CU offense got off to a good start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a Trenton Gilman two RBI single.
  • Abbgy struggled in the third inning allowing two runs in the top of the third and was forced to leave the game with the bases loaded as Jared Riley came in for relief.
  • Riley struggled to find the strike zone as well hitting a batter and walking a batter with the bases loaded to allow two more runs to score and give LTU the 4-3 lead.
  • An error by the CU catcher allowed one more LTU run to score in the top of the third to increase their lead to 5-3.
  • After a hit by pitch and a walk Jared Riley was relieved by Brett Shure. Shure gave up a single before getting a pair of groundouts to end the inning. LTU was able to score on one of the groundouts to increase their lead to 6-3.
  • Cornerstone got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an Austin Hurt sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • Gabe Zeiger grounded out in the bottom of the fifth to score Aaron Krupansky and cut the deficit back to just one at 6-5.
  • The game was then called for darkness after five complete innings of play due to a power outage that did not allow the field lights to work. Cu fell 6-5.
