Baseball ends Florida trip with split vs. Robert Morris

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles concluded their spring break trip to Florida with a double-header against Robert Morris and won the first game 7-0, but fell 5-1 in game two. Jon Martin recorded a career high nine K's in game one while Austin Hurt hit his first career homerun in game two to highlight the action for the Golden Eagles. CU finishes the trip 6-7 and now holds an overall record of 6-11. The team will be back in GR for four games at Davenport University next Friday and Saturday. 

Game One 
  • Cornerstone found the scoreboard first with a big second inning scoring four runs, highlighted by a bases clearing three RBI triple from Austin Hurt. A groundout by Jan Elias scored the fourth run to give CU a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second inning. 
  • CU starter recorded a strong first two innings allowing a hit to leadoff the bottom of the first, but then followed that with six consecutive outs, three of those being strikeouts. 
  • Jon Martin added six more K's in his next three innings of work allowing just two hits and no runs before Alan LaBov took over in relief duty and keep the score 4-0. 
  • Cornerstone added two runs in the top of the seventh to pad the lead, as Eric Bradberry hit an RBI single that scored Austin Hurt and Aaron Krupansky hit a sacrifice fly to score Jan Elias and make the score 6-0. 
  • Gabe Zeiger added one more run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single that scored Chase Mitchell making the score 7-0
  • Alan LaBov returned to the mound looking to close out the shutout and did just that, giving CU the 7-0 win in game one. 
 
 
Game Two 
  • Robert Morris scored their first runs of the day to get on the board first in game two with two runs in the top of the second. RMU saw back-to-back hits that would bring in the runs to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Cornerstone quickly responded, getting a run back after a homerun by the freshman Austin Hurt. The HR is the first of Hurt's career and the first for any CU player this season. 
  • Both pitching staffs settled into a grove for the next four innings as both teams would threaten but neither scored to keep the score at 2-1 entering the seventh. 
  • RMU finally ended the scoring drought, scoring three in the top of the seventh that included a deep RBI triple that scored two. 
  • CU saw two pinch hitters come in for the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to start a rally going down 1-2-3 to result ins a 5-1 loss in game two.  
 
By the Numbers
4 – Austin Hurt led the team with four RBI on the day, three in game one and one in game two. 
 
9 – Nine K's ties the most of any CU pitcher this season and is a career high for Jon Martin.
 
12 – CU recorded 12 hits on the day. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone returns home and will have the week off before traveling down the road to Davenport next weekend for four games.
