Young leads baseball to home split with Siena Heights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a series between two teams fighting for a WHAC Tournament playoff spot, the Golden Eagles split with the Saints losing 10-1 in game one and winning 6-0 in game two. Senior starting pitcher Collin Young pitched his second nine-inning complete game shutout of the season, allowing just four hits to go along with six K's in CU's 6-0 game two win. Cornerstone is now 14-20 on the year and 7-7 in the WHAC as they get set for a non-conference game at NCAA DI Central Michigan on Tuesday at 4 p.m. 

Game One 
  • After a scoreless first inning, SHU found the scoreboard in the second after a balk by starting pitcher Chandler McKinney brought home the runner from third base. 
  • The Saints found three more runs in the top of the third inning on three hits including an RBI double to make the score 4-0. 
  • CU got a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Jarod Burton that scored Austin Hurt from first base to cut the score to 4-1. 
  • The starting pitchers of Chandler McKinney and Reid Olmstead got in a groove after the third, holding the opponent scoreless through the next three innings. 
  • Daniel Abbgy came in as the first reliever for CU in the top of the seventh inning. 
  • SHU was able to blow the game open in the top of the seventh, with a. grand slam by Connor McCoy to make the score 8-1 in favor of the Saints. 
  • Jared Riley came in after SHU got more runners on base in the top of the ninth. Riley did a good job to get out of the inning, but not before Siena Heights added two more runs after a Cornerstone error to make the score 2-1. 
  • Dustin DeBeau doubled in the bottom of the ninth but the Golden Eagles were unable to score, falling 10-1 in game one.  
 
Game Two
  • Collin Young got the start in game two and allowed two hits in the first two innings but was able to hold the Saints scoreless. 
  • Young followed his first two innings of work with three consecutive 1-2-3 innings to keep the game scoreless through five innings. 
  • After a pair of walks and a bunt single by Gabe Zeiger, CU broke the scoreless tie when SHU starter Tristan Roth hit Joe Corsten with the to bring home pinch runner Chase Mitchell
  • A second run came in during the bottom of the fifth when Trenton Gilman grounded into a bases loaded fielder's choice that brought home Gabe Zeiger to make the score 2-0. 
  • With over 100 pitches under his belt, SHU starter Tristan Roth continued into the seventh inning. The Golden Eagles were able to get to him, scoring two runs on a Trenton Gilman RBI single through the left side to make it 4-0. 
  • Taylor Acquista came in to pitch the remainder of the seventh and shut the CU offense down to keep the Saints deficit at four. 
  • Cornerstone added another run in the bottom of the eight on a Gabe Zeiger double that scored Aaron Krupansky to make the score 5-0 and force the Saints into another pitching change. 
  • One more run crossed the plate in the bottom of the eighth as Chase Mitchell scored on a Joe Corsten sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. 
  • Collin Young came out for the ninth despite being over 100 pitches and earned his second nine-inning complete game shutout 
 
By the Numbers 
4/4 – Senior Gabe Zeiger went 4-4 in game two runs scored and an RBI.
 
2 – Senior Aaron Krupansky had two hits in each of today's games. 
 
1.80 – Senior Collin Young dropped his ERA back to under two as it sits at 1.80 in 45.0 innings pitched this season. 
 
11 – The winning team had 11 hits in today's double-header, Siena Heights with 11 in game one and Cornerstone with 11 in game two. 
 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will have Saturday off before taking on NCAA Division I Central Michigan for a non-conference game on Tuesday.
