Baseball rebounds with sweep of UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles responded after a pair of losses yesterday with a pair of home conference wins today, defeating UM-Dearborn 6-5 and 10-3. CU was originally scheduled to play on the road, but due to rain in the Detroit area there was a last-minute change that moved it to De Witt Field. CU is now 16-23, 9-9 WHAC as they keep their conference tournament hopes alive heading into the final week of the regular season. 

Game One
  • Game one got off to a good start as Joe Corsten brought home Aaron Krupansky with an RBI single in the top of the first to lead 1-0. 
  • UM-Dearborn responded in the bottom of the first inning with a run on a groundout that scored Andrew Capon and tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. 
  • Gabe Zeiger hit his second HR of the season in the top of the second, a two-run shot to regain the lead 3-1. 
  • The starting pitchers of Noah Reed and Garrett Davis then began to settle in as no runs scored until the fifth inning keeping the Golden Eagles lead at two. 
  • UM-Dearborn cut into the CU lead with an RBI single from Daniel Kerr that made it a one run game. 
  • Daniel Kerr then had another RBI single that tied the game at 3-3. 
  • UM-Dearborn chased starter Noah Reed out of the game and Chandler McKinney came in to conclude the seventh. The Wolverines were able to score two more runs however to take their first lead of the game at 5-3. 
  • Cornerstone responded with a clutch top of the eighth inning. Three runs crossed the plate, highlighted by a pair fo RBI singles from Trevor Bastien and Joe Corsten that gave CU the lead back at 6-5. 
  • Aaron Krupansky moved from his shortstop role to pitch the final two innings. Krupansky allowed just two hits and no runs for his first save of the season giving the Golden Eagles a 6-5 win.  
   
Game Two 
  • The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start yet again with a huge second inning offensively scoring five runs to go on top 5-0. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI single from Aaron Krupansky
  • In the third, Liam Griffin hit a sacrifice fly that scored Trenton Gilman to make the score 6-0. 
  • Daniel Kerr hit an infield single to score Andrew Capon giving the Wolverines their first run in the bottom of the third cutting the score to 6-1. 
  • Starter Jared Riley was dominant in his third start, going 6.0 innings allowing just one earned run and six hits. 
  • Andrew VanDyke came in to start the seventh and struggled, going just two thirds of an inning and giving up two runs on an RBI single and an error cutting the Golden Eagles lead to 6-3. 
  • CU got a run back in the top of the ninth after Aaron Krupansky tripled, he was hit home on an RBI single from Jarod Burton to make it 7-3. 
  • A Joe Corsten single in the top of the ninth would score pinch runner Chase Mitchell to increase the Golden Eagle lead to 8-3. 
  • Austin Hurt helped the Golden Eagles continue to pour it on in the top of the ninth with a two-run home run that increased the CU lead to 10-3. 
  • Clayton Coatney pitched the final 2.1 innings and faced trouble but got out of it to help the Golden Eagles win 10-3. 
 
By the Numbers 
2 – The Golden Eagles hit two HR's on the day, Gabe Zeiger with a two-run shot in game one and Austin Hurt with a two-run bomb in game two. 
 
6 – Aaron Krupansky had a six-hit day, with three in each game. 
 
27 – The Golden Eagles had double digit hits in each game for 27 on the day. 
 
4 – Golden Eagle pitchers allowed just four walks, two in each game. 
 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will continue WHAC play with the final weekend of regular season action vs. UNOH on Friday, April 26 with a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
