Baseball falls 4-2 in non-conference game vs. Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a game that saw a total of 40 players see the field, the Golden Eagles lost to the Hope College Dutchmen 4-2. After getting out to a 2-0 lead, Hope would score four unanswered to drop the Golden Eagles to 13-19 on the season. Cornerstone will get back to conference action as they host Siena Heights on Friday for a double-header starting at 1 p.m. before getting Saturday off.

Game Highlights
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles found the scoreboard in the bottom of the second after back-to-back RBI singles from Austin Hurt and Kyle DeSchryver to make the score 2-0.
  • After 2.2 scoreless innings from starter Brett Shure, Brandon Bush came in for relief and shut the door on the bases loaded jam to keep the Golden Eagles on top 2-0.
  • Hope was able to tie the game at two in the top of the fourth after a pair of solo homeruns from Tedd Eppinga and Jordon Fairchild.
  • After a stolen base and an error on the CU catcher, a groundout scored a run for Flying Dutchmen in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
  • The two pitching staffs began to take over after the fifth inning as the score remained 3-2 in favor of Hope. Both teams had multiple substitutions throughout the game to get some bench players playing time, including a full line change for the Dutchmen.
  • After a pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth by Gabe Zeiger and Trevor Bastien the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the game at a three, but a 7-5-2 putout at the plate on a sacrifice fly attempt would end the inning and keep the Dutchmen in the lead at 3-2.
  • Noah Reed took over the pitching duties in the top of the ninth and after a fielding error by the Golden Eagles the Dutchmen added an insurance run to go on top 4-2.
  • Cornerstone went down 1-2-3 at the plate in the bottom of the ninth to fall 4-2.
