GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles returned to their home floor and got a huge rebound win over one of the top three teams in the WHAC, winning 3-1 over Indiana Tech. Cornerstone won the first two sets before dropping the third, only to rebound with a dominating 25-13 set four victory. With the win, Cornerstone is now 5-6, 2-1 WHAC on the year as they will be back in action tomorrow night at 5 p.m. against another conference foe in Northwestern Ohio.
Game Recap – CU – 3 IIT – 1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-13)
- After a slow first few points Cornerstone would go on a 7-1 run to take an 8-5 lead capped off by a service ace from Lindsey Barry.
- Jackie Stanko would later record a kill to make it 13-9 and force IIT into a timeout.
- The Warriors battled back to cut the deficit to one at 18-17, but Cornerstone ended the set on a 7-3 run finished off by a kill from Olivia Keelean to win set one 25-21.
- Cornerstone continued to dominate in set two getting out to a 14-9 lead that was capped off by a Brooke Nicholson kill.
- CU ended the set on an 11-6 run, as Indiana Tech recorded 10 attacking errors and four service errors in the second set. The set two final was 25-16 in favor of Cornerstone.
- Indiana Tech put up much more of a fight in set three, as Cornerstone was forced to use a timeout after the Warriors took a 14-12 lead.
- Cornerstone responded, forcing Indiana Tech into a timeout after cutting the deficit to one at 19-18. Brooke Nicholson recorded back-to-back kills to get CU back in the set.
- Indiana Tech ended the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-20 and stay alive in the match.
- The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start in the fourth, taking a 9-0 lead that saw a pair of kills from Alexis Angus and Olivia Keelean.
- After an attack error from Indiana Tech, the Warriors called a timeout as CU held a 14-4 lead in set four.
- Cornerstone did not let up in set four as once again the Warriors had 10 attacking errors to help CU win the set 24-13 and the match 3-1.
By the Numbers
- Middle hitters Alexis Angus and Brooke Nicholson combined for 30 kills on the match.
- Kayla Clark recorded 45 of the Golden Eagles 52 assists on the match.
- Cornerstone hit a whopping .310 on the match which is a season high mark.
- Indiana Tech ended the match with 29 attacking errors.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will continue their Go for Gold Childhood Cancer weekend with a match against Northwestern Ohio tomorrow at 5 p.m. inside Mol Arena.
