ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Cornerstone opened up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon against Concordia. A late goal by the Cardinals evened the game at 2-2 to force an overtime period, where Concordia ultimately sealed the game. Despite the loss, Senior goalkeeper
Joshua Mitchell set a program record with a whopping 23 saves, 13 of which came in the second half and three big ones in overtime. Cornerstone drops to 1-6-1, 0-1 WHAC heading into Wednesday's rivalry match at Aquinas.
The Highlights:
- The Golden Eagles got on the board first with 17:37 to play in the first half. Ben Stump sent a set piece to a crowded box that ultimately led to Micah Boggs burying his second goal of the season.
- With six minutes to play in the first half, the Cardinals had a chance to even the game with a straight away free kick from 22 yards out. The shot went directly to Joshua Mitchell, who was able to make the save.
- Just eight minutes into the second frame, Micah Boggs dribbled down the right sideline, around the defender, then slotted a pass to Welamaza Magwentshu, who put it in the back of the net to make it 2-0.
- The Cardinals responded quickly when a sharp angle shot deflected off a CU defender and into the goal to cut the lead to 2-1.
- A perfectly placed header off a corner kick by Concordia evened the score at 2-2 with just over seven minutes to play.
- Concordia nearly took the lead when a shot rang off the crossbar with three minutes to go, but the game ultimately needed overtime.
- With under a minute to go in the golden-goal OT, the Cardinals slipped one past Mitchell to end the game.
