Volleyball set for home opener in AQ/CU Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Golden Eagles are set for a busy home opening weekend as they will play four games in two days as part of the Aquinas/Cornerstone Invitational. CU looks to build on their 2-2 overall record in 2019 with four tough opponents in IU-Kokomoand (24) Marian on Friday, and Thomas More and Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday. Quick Facts: 
  • First year Head Coach Megan Lenhart became the 13thcoach in program history to record a win with the program, starting her career 2-2 at the SXU/TCC Crossover. 
  • Alexis Angus was strong in the middle to open the year, recording a team high .377 hitting percentage to go along with 32 kills and a team high 13 total blocks. Angus recorded a career high 12 kills at (RV) Trinity Christian.
  • Brooke Nicholson was also strong out of the middle, second on the team in blocks through the first four games with nine. 
  • CU went 1-2 vs. NAIA Top 25/RV opponents this weekend, making the team 16-25 against ranked opponents the past five years. 
  • Cornerstone is 17-1 in home openers since 2001, and saw a 35-game winning streak run from the end of 2015 to the middle of 2018. CU has lost just four home games in the past four years. 

Opponent Facts: 
  • Cornerstone's opponents have a combined record of 28-2 in the 2019 season. 
  • Indiana Wesleyan defeated NAIA no. 1 and no. 2 in the Columbia Invitational last weekend. 
  • No. 24 Marian played Cornerstone at the SXU/TCC Crossover and swept the Golden Eagles in straight sets. 
  • Thomas More is the lone Cornerstone opponent this weekend that is not from the Crossroads League, as they come from the Mid-South Conference. 
  • Former Cornerstone Head Coach Ryan Campbell and Aquinas will also be hosting each of these four opponents, before the two teams meet next Wednesday for the WHAC Opener.
