Slow start dooms Women’s Basketball at Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. – The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start on the road against Taylor, scoring just three points in the first quarter to fall behind 23-3 at the end of the one. The early deficit was too much to overcome as CU fell 107-59 at another tough Crossroads League opponent in the Trojans of Taylor University. CU is now 2-3 on the year as they will have a quick turnaround with a game at Grace Christian on Monday at 7 p.m.

How it happened:
-        Taylor got off to an incredibly fast start, hitting three shots from behind the arc in the first 2:15 of the game to go on top 11-0 and force the Golden Eagles into an early timeout.
-        Five minutes into the game, Cornerstone found their first bucket on a Skylar Scholten three to make it 16-3.
-        The defense began to settle in toward the end of the first quarter for CU, but the team could not find the bucket offensively, going 1-14 in the period to trail 23-3.
-        Both teams saw shooting woes in the second quarter as a total of four points between both sides were scored in the first 3:30 to make the score 25-5 in favor of the Trojans.
-        The offense started to heat up at the end of the half for CU as Layna Steele, Maddison Fulks, and Katrina Goebel all got a bucket to make it 32-11.
-        At halftime the Trojans led 45-14, holding the Golden Eagles to 15.3% from the field on 4-26 shooting.
-        Layna Steele got hot in the third quarter as she tallied 12 of the Golden Eagles 37 points after three, but it was not enough as the deficit continued to grow at 82-39.
-        The Golden Eagles bench saw plenty of action in the fourth quarter as the team fell 107-59 on the road.

By the numbers:
15-42 – Taylor likes to shoot the three-ball hitting 15 of 42 attempts in the game.
15 – Layna Steele scored her most points as a Golden Eagle leading the team with 15 on the day.
45-33 – CU was outrebounded 45-33 as Taylor brought down 15 offensive rebounds in the game.
10/7. – Allyson Richards was the only other Golden Eagle in double-figures with 10 as she also brought down seven rebounds.
48 – The 48 point loss is the Golden Eagles largest loss of the season.

What's next?
Cornerstone has a quick turnaround and another road contest as they head to the other side of town to take on Grace Christian University on Monday at 7 p.m. This will be the Golden Eagles fifth road contest in six games and third in a row.
