COCHRAN, Ga. – The Golden Eagles took on a tough Middle Georgia State squad who is ranked 22
ndnationally and suffered a pair of one run losses. In game one, freshman
Grant Young and senior
Zach Brog combined to throw a one-hitter but the team fell 3-2. In game two, CU made a huge two out comeback to tie the game at four in the top of the seventh, but fell on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the inning. Cornerstone is 0-2 on the year and they will continue their time in Georgia and Florida in the coming days with 20 more games over the next 14 days.
Game One – Middle Georgia State – 3 Cornerstone – 2
- The young Golden Eagles got off to a fast start as Cain Ruiz hit a lead-off double and later came around to score on a passed ball to make it 1-0.
- In his first collegiate at bat, true freshman Jordan Wenzel hit a home run to left field to make it 2-0 in the top of the first.
- True freshman Grant Young was rolling early on the mound, going three no-hit innings with four strikeouts to keep the score 2-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
- Middle Georgia State got their first run on their first hit in the fourth inning as a single from the designated hitter scored Bucky McGlamerey to make it 2-1.
- After a lead-off walk in the fifth, Grant Young excited the game and was relieved for by Zach Brog. Brog gave up a run that tied the game on a wild pitch but then got out of trouble to keep the game tied 2-2.
- Brog pitched the remainder of the game and in the bottom of the sixth MGA scored an unearned run after Michael Garner stole third and then came home on an error by catcher Daniel Sewak to give them their first lead 3-2.
- CU was quickly on the hot seat needing a run in the top of the seventh, but Middle Georgia State pitcher Drew Martens took them down 1-2-3 to earn the win and down the Golden Eagles 3-2 in game one.
Game Two - Middle Georgia State – 5 Cornerstone – 4
- Middle Georgia State got off to a fast start scoring a run of game two starter Jared Riley in the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- Some sloppy play in the second inning allowed two more runs to score for MGA in the second to make it 3-0.
- Kyle DeSchryver has a huge two out knock in the third to keep the game close as Trenton Gilman and Jordan Wenzel both scored to cut the CU deficit to just one at 3-2.
- William Ramirez singled up the middle in the bottom of the third to give Middle Georgia State an insurance run and push the lead back to two at 4-2.
- Derryk Vanderjagt came in during the fourth and got out of a jam to keep the score 4-2.
- Clayton Schwiebert came in and pitched in the sixth to become the third freshman CU pitcher of the day.
- After a stagnant final few innings, Cornerstone recorded a huge rally with two runs in the top of the seventh that were helped along by a three-base error from Middle Georgia State and a Jordan Wenzel RBI single to make it 4-4.
- After tying the game, Mike Modert came in and pitched the bottom of the inning and struggled in his first appearance, recording two hit by pitches, and intentional walk, and two walks to allow Middle Georgia State to walk-off and win the game 5-4.
