COCHRAN, Ga. – The Golden Eagles were unable to steal a win against a tough No. 22 Middle Georgia State squad falling 4-1 in game one and 14-4 in game two.
Kyle DeSchryver highlighted the offense with a grand slam in game two, but not much else would be found for the Golden Eagles at the plate. On the mound, CU struggled to find the strike zone as they move to 0-4 overall to start the year. CU will have a travel day tomorrow before picking up neutral site action against Point Park (Pa.) in Auburndale, Florida on Tuesday at 12 p.m.
Game One – Middle Georgia State – 4 Cornerstone – 1
- Cornerstone scored first in game one thanks to a double error by the Knights as well as a stolen base from Jordan Wenzel. The MGA catcher threw it into left, which was followed by an overthrow from the left fielder that allowed Wenzel to score and make it 1-0.
- Middle Georgia State responded to tie the game right away, scoring a run on a CU error as Bucky McGlamery scored an unearned run.
- CU starter Andrew VanDyke then settled in for four great innings of work, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
- VanDyke struggled in the fifth as he walked the bases loaded before he was relieved by freshman Dylan VandenBerg.
- VandenBerg hit his first batter that scored the MGA game winning run that made it 2-1. Two more runs scored later in the inning on an error and a fielder's choice to make it 4-1, as the Knights found a way to score three runs on no hits.
- CU could not get to MGA starter Logan Carter, as he went six innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five batters.
- Logan Howell came in for the seventh inning and earned the save for Middle Georgia State sitting Cornerstone down 1-2-3. The Golden Eagles dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 4-1 game one loss.
Game Two - Middle Georgia State – 14 Cornerstone – 4
- Jeremy Praski struggled early in his first appearance of the season, walking the first two batters which both later came around to score on a Kal Dempsey double to make it 2-0 in favor of MGA at the end of the first inning.
- Praski responded in the second inning to strikeout the side to keep it 2-0 after two innings of play.
- After more walk issues in the third inning, MGA scored a third run on a sacrifice fly by catcher Angel Acosta to make it 3-0.
- Jackson Helder came in and made his first collegiate appearance in a bases loaded one out situation in the third inning.
- Helder gave up one single that scored a run to make it 4-0. An error on CU, a wild pitch, and a passed ball allowed four more runs to score to blow the game open and make it 8-0 in favor of the Knights at the end of the third.
- Just when you thought the Golden Eagles were out of it, Kyle DeSchryver stayed hot and hit a grand slam home run to get CU back in the game and cut it to 8-4.
- MGA immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth, as Jonnie Benniefield came around to score on a passed ball after getting on via an error to make it 9-4.
- Jason Gross relieved Helder in the fifth and gave up a single and two double that scored four runs and made it 13-4.
- Caden Ritsema relieved Gross and allowed one run to give MGA the 14-4 lead.
- Cornerstone was unable to find any offense outside the grand slam as they fell 14-4 in game two to drop both on the day as they conclude their time in Georgia.
