AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles drop to 0-6 to start the year, after struggling to find their offense and falling to Point Park 6-1, and 11-7. Cornerstone held a 3-0 lead in game two until the sixth inning until the Pioneers put up a nine spot to blow the game wide open. The Golden Eagles responded with a four spot in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as they fell 11-7. CU will continue Russ Matt action with a game against Judson at 10:30 a.m. and Mount Vernon Nazarene at 2 p.m. tomorrow back at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
Game One – Point Park – 6 Cornerstone - 1
- Mike Modert got the start in game one and ran into one early mistake before settling in, giving up a solo home run to the Pioneers three hitter Antonio Carrillo to make it 1-0.
- In the second inning, Modert walked two and hit a batter that allowed another Point Park run to score and make it 2-0.
- Point Park kept the pressure on in the third as a lead-off double by the catcher Luis Mujica came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Cole Horew to make it 3-0.
- Cornerstone finally found their offense in the top of the fourth, recording four consecutive hits including an RBI single from Austin Hurt to score Cain Ruiz that cut the deficit to 3-1.
- Point Park got out of the jam in the top of the fourth leaving the bases loaded to keep the score 3-1.
- Freshman Grant Young hit the team's first triple of the season in the top of the fifth, but CU was unable to score the run keeping the deficit at two, 3-1.
- Mike Modert finished his day with a solid line, pitching 5.0 innings allowing four hits and three runs while striking out four.
- Caden Ritsema came in and pitched the sixth and gave up a run on an RBI double that allowed Point Park to increase the lead to 4-1.
- After the bases were loaded with no outs, Landon Poll made an outstanding play at third to get a double play, but another run scored to make it 5-1.
- Point Park added one more off Ritsema for three total in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-1.
- Cornerstone had no answer in the seventh as they fell 6-1 in game one.
Game Two – Point Park – 11 Cornerstone - 7
- Cornerstone got off to a fast start offensively in game two with a pair of singles from Jordan Wenzel and Kyle DeSchryver each recorded singles which were followed by an RBI single from Grant Young later in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
- A dropped ball by the Point Park first basemen allowed pinch runner Josh Magley to score in the first as well to make it 2-0.
- After the inning was extended, Landon Poll found himself an RBI infield knock that scored Grant Young to make it 3-0 after one inning of play.
- Kyle DeSchryver diced early in his first collegiate pitching appearance, as the senior allowed just one hit through the first four innings while striking out three to keep the CU lead at 3-0.
- In the top of the fifth, Cain Ruiz made a phenomenal play in left field, taking away a home run to keep it 3-0.
- After recording one out in the fifth, Kyle DeSchryver was relieved by the hard throwing Jared Riley as CU continued to lead 3-0.
- A long top of the sixth inning that saw three different pitchers for CU resulted in a run scored for Point Park, as the Pioneers got a run home on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
- A second run scored in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded walk to make it 3-2.
- Point Park then blew the game wide open with multiple hits scoring a total of nine runs in the inning to go on top 9-3.
- The Pioneers added two more runs on a fielder's choice and a bases loaded hit by pitch to make it 11-3.
- CU made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs highlighted by a Dan Sewak two run home run, but it was not enough as the team fell 11-7 in game two.
