Women’s Volleyball sweeps Thomas More to open campaign

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles got off to a great start after a long-awaited season opener, taking down Thomas More in straight sets inside Mol Arena on Friday evening. CU was excellent behind the service line recording eight aces and continually getting the Saints out of system to move to 1-0 to begin the year. Cornerstone will quickly hit the road for the Trinity International/Judson Crossover as the team will play Judson first tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. EST followed by a 4 p.m. EST match with Trinity International. Both games will be played in TIU's gym and no fans will be allowed. Tune in to cugoldeneagles.com to catch the action. 

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Thomas More - 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-15)
  • Brooke Nicholson recorded back-to-back kills for the team's first points of the season to help CU get out to a 3-1 lead. 
  • A 4-0 run on Rylie Walters serve helped Cornerstone go on top 18-10 in set one and force Thomas More into a timeout. 
  • The Saints saw five errors after their timeout as CU breezed to a 25-16 set one victory. 
  • Cornerstone once again saw a big run mid set in set two, as Olivia Keelean served a 6-0 run that included two aces to give CU the 17-10 advantage. 
  • The Golden Eagles ended the set on a 5-0 run capped off by an Alexis Angus kill for their biggest margin of victory, 25-13 in set two. 
  • Thomas More stayed in set three for a while as trailing by just one at 13-12. 
  • Rylie Walters once again was phenomenal behind the service line, leading CU to their largest run of the match with an 8-0 stretch that saw three kills from Bailey Cummings
  • A pair of TMU errors ended the set and the match as Cornerstone took set three 25-15.

9 – Bailey Cummings led the team with nine kills on the match. 
16 – Patsy Morris was great defensively, leading the team with 16 digs. 
33 – Kayla Clark recorded 33 of the teams 36 assists. 
8-1 – Cornerstone recorded eight service aces to TMU's one as four different Golden Eagles had a pair. 
20-10 – CU only committed 10 attacking errors in the match while Thomas More committed 20.

Cornerstone will hit the road tomorrow for a pair of matches against Judson and Trinity International in the Trinity International Crossover.
