WICHITA, Kan./MARION, Ind. – Cornerstone returned to the second and final day of events at the Friends University Invite and the Indiana Wesleyan Invite on Saturday and continued their strong debut. The men's distance crew saw a pair of big PR's from
Colten Covington and
Luke Koopman while the duo of
Carter Sabin and
Peter Willcome shined in the finish of the heptathlon. Cornerstone will send athletes to Indiana Tech on Friday, January 29 for their next meet.
Men's Results
The duo of
Carter Sabin and
Peter Willcome returned for the final three events of the heptathlon, beginning with the 60m hurdles that saw the freshman Sabin clock a time of 8.74 and rank fifth on CU's all-time indoor list. In the sixth event, Willcome cleared a PR height of 3.63m in the pole vault, while Sabin cleared 2.73m in his debut. In the seventh and final event, the 1,000m Willcome clocked a time of 2:58.89 and Sabin recorded a time of 3:03.04. At the conclusion of the heptathlon, the freshman Sabin recorded 4,215 points to rank sixth in CU history in his debut and finish second in the event. Willcome PR'd and finished fourth in the event with 4,158 points to move to seventh in Cornerstone program history.
Colten Covington saw his first action of the indoor season on Saturday, clocking a PR in the mile with a time of 4:31.02 as he finished fourth in the event.
Luke Koopman continued the men's distance success recording a monster 46 second PR in the 5,000m at Indiana Wesleyan with a time of 15:24.44.
Josh Devries returned for his sophomore campaign in the pole vault at IWU and cleared 4.65m to rank 4
th in the NAIA and earn the win in the event.
Zach Kooyer recorded a PR in the pole vault, clearing 3.90m.
Women's Results
Women's action opened at IWU with the 3,000m where
Nygia Pollard won the event with a time of 10:42.13.
Over at friends,
Braely Herrema followed her pentathlon second place finish from yesterday with a win in the high jump, clearing 1.57m.
Haley Nieuwkoop back at IWU recorded a huge PR in her first event of 2021 and a national qualifying mark of 17:59.91 to move up to fourth on the CU all-time indoor list in the 5,000m. This PR was 39 seconds faster than her previous best.
Ashley VerPlank finished third at IWU in the pole vault, clearing 3.27m.
The trio of
Morgan Luedy,
Halle Schnyders, and Sharlene Stallworth competed in the 200m at Friends, and finished sixth, 10
th, and 25
th respectively with Luedy coming just shy of a PR at 27:31.
At IWU,
Evangelina Helderop debuted in the 400 and finished fourth in the event with a time of 1:02.30.
