PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Golden Eagles continued their hot start, doing something they have not done since 2015, winning their fourth straight match in straight sets with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 win at defending CCAC Champion Trinity Christian. Cornerstone hit .301 on the day which was a season best to improve to 4-0 on the year. CU will open WHAC play back in Grand Rapids on Friday with an 8 p.m. match against the Lourdes Gray Wolves.
Game Flow – Cornerstone – 3 Trinity International – 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23)
- After falling behind 3-0, Cornerstone took their first lead 6-5 on an Alexis Angus kill as part of a 3-0 run.
- Neither team could get up by more than two, until Alexis Angus and Bailey Cummings combined for back-to-back kills to go along with a couple TCC errors to make it 18-14 Golden Eagles and force the Trolls into their first timeout.
- CU ended the set on a 7-5 run capped off by a kill from the birthday girl Brooke Nicholson to earn a 25-19 set one victory. CU hit .333 with 13 kills and three errors in the first set.
- Cornerstone got off to an early lead 9-5 in set two, helped out by four attacking errors and a service error from the Trolls.
- A huge block from Alexis Angus and Kayla Clark made it 11-7 in set two and forced Trinity into a timeout.
- CU did not give up the lead the remainder of the second set, cruising to a 25-16 win to go up 2 games to none. The Trolls could not get out of their own way in the set with eight attacking errors and five service errors.
- Trinity Christian came out strong in set three, taking a 6-2 advantage that was capped off by a kill from Brooke Veldman.
- A 5-1 run from the Golden Eagles gave them their first lead of set three at 11-10 on an Olivia Keelean service ace.
- The set continued to trade back points back and forth as the teams were tied in points 14 different times throughout.
- After it was 21-21, Cornerstone scored four of the last six points, winning the set 25-23 on an Alexis Angus kill to seal a match sweep.
