MARION, Ind. – The Golden Eagles traveled to Indiana Wesleyan for some mid-season non-conference action, winning their first game over Saint Francis of Illinois in four sets, before falling in four sets to a young (21) Indiana Wesleyan squad. Cornerstone now moves to 13-11 on the year and remains 7-2 in WHAC play as they will now have a week off before they start the second half of conference play at Northwestern Ohio next Friday at 7 p.m.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 Saint Francis (Ill.) – 1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19)
- Early in set one, Kylie Barron spurred a 4-0 CU run with a kill followed by three USF errors to take a 6-4 edge.
- Three kills from Rylie Walters as part of a 6-0 run helped Cornerstone get out to a 12-5 advantage.
- An attack error by the Golden Eagles would relinquish the set one advantage, 20-19.
- With the set tied at 23, Kaylee Dykema recorded a pair of kills to give CU the 25-23 win in set one.
- CU trailed by four on multiple occasions with the set at 17-13, before Aubrey Lenz had a kill that capped off a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to one.
- Olivia Keelean and Kylie Barron combined for a big block to put CU at set point, 24-23, but the Saints responded to score three straight points and take set two, 26-24 tying the match.
- Two more kills from Kylie Barron put Cornerstone on top 5-2 in set three.
- After USF came back to take the lead, CU went on a 7-0 run that saw a block from Jada Thomas and Rylie Walters to lead 13-10.
- Saint Francis again came back to tie things, but Cornerstone went on a 6-1 run to end the set and win 25-21 behind four Saint errors.
- Set four was the first time CU was able to pull away early and maintain the advantage as Aubrey Lenz recorded a kill to make it 14-7.
- The story of the game, attack errors from the Saints ended up being match point as Cornerstone took set four 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
Game Two: Cornerstone – 1 (21) Indiana Wesleyan – 3 (14-25, 25-22, 11-25, 14-25)
- The host Wildcats got off to a strong start in the second game of the day, taking a 14-8 advantage on a Victoria Johnson kill.
- IWU could not be stopped in the first set, winning 25-14 on a kill from Ana Collar.
- Cornerstone hit negative in set one with seven kills and eight errors.
- CU responded in a huge way in set two, going on top 10-3 early behind a big block from Kathryn Detweiler.
- Patsy Morris made some outstanding plays defensively in set two to keep CU in the lead 14-8.
- Indiana Wesleyan chipped away to cut the deficit to three, but Kylie Barron and Olivia Keelean each recorded kills to bring it back to a five-point game at 19-14.
- Once again IWU cut into the deficit, but CU never relinquished the lead, winning set two 25-22 on a Wildcat attacking error.
- In set three, the momentum swung back in the favor of Indiana Wesleyan as Ana Collar recorded three straight kills to give the Wildcats a 7-2 advantage and force Cornerstone into a timeout.
- Cornerstone was never able to recover, falling 25-11 in set three. IWU hit .265 in the set.
- Staying true to how the match had gone, momentum again shifted, as Cornerstone took an 8-3 edge behind a pair of Olivia Keelean kills to force an IWU timeout.
- Indiana Wesleyan scored five straight points to tie set four at 8-8 and force Cornerstone into their first timeout.
- After the CU timeout, the Wildcats scored five more points to conclude a 10-0 run and go on top 13-8.
- After a long delay at 15-10, Indiana Wesleyan continued to pour it on, winning set four 25-14 to secure the match 3-1.
