Women's Volleyball Sweeps Indiana Tech in WHAC Semis

LIVONIA, Mich. – Cornerstone continued their dominance in the WHAC Tournament by thumping Indiana Tech with a 3-0 sweep in the semifinal round. Rylie Walters led the way with 13 kills, helping the Golden Eagles win the match to set up a showdown with the hosts and one seed Madonna. Cornerstone is 1-1 against Madonna this season falling in the final match of the regular season, giving Madonna the regular season WHAC crown. With the win over Indiana Tech, CU moves to 24-13. Also, because Madonna and CU won tonight, Cornerstone will automatically qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Indiana Tech – 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21)
  • The first set was tight with a lot of back-and-forth action. With Indiana Tech up 13-11, CU went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 lead.
  • With CU up 22-16 and starting to pull away, the Trojans responded with six-point run to even up the set at 22-22, leading to a Golden Eagle timeout.
  • After a Trojan service error, Rylie Walters put away the set for Cornerstone with back-to-back kills as CU took set one 25-22.
  • CU went on another run early in the second set, rattling off four points in a row, capped by a Kaylee Dykema kill, to put the Golden Eagles up 6-4.
  • After some back-and-forth action, both teams went on 3-0 runs, with Cornerstone capping theirs with a big co-block from Olivia Keelean and Kylie Barron to go up 11-9.
  • Another 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles helped extend their lead later in the second set as they took a 19-15 advantage.
  • Both teams traded points, but Kylie Barron decided it was time to end the set as she put away the final point on a kill to take set two 25-19.
  • Cornerstone had multiple 2-3 point runs in the third set to slowly break down the Indiana Tech defenses.
  • Rylie Walters started off the third set hot as she recorded five kills in the first ten points won by CU in this stanza.
  • Kathryn Detweiler was also effective, rattling off two kills midway through the third set, putting Cornerstone up 14-8.
  • A 3-0 run by CU, capped by a Rylie Walters kills, put the Golden Eagles up 19-10 as they had their sights set on finishing out the match.
  • Up 24-21, Kathryn Detweiler sealed the match with a kill, to give Cornerstone a 3-0 sweep after taking the third set 25-21.
 
By the Numbers
13 – Rylie Walters led the way with 13 kills for the Golden Eagles.
10/6 – Cornerstone recorded 10 blocks compared to Madonna's 6.
20 – Patsy Morris was a defensive machine, racking up 20 digs on the night.
