SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Cornerstone looked good in the first quarter of their first road WHAC test, shooting 46% but they were unable to withstand the Blue Devil response as they fell 66-53 on Wednesday night at Lawrence Tech.
Olivia Kubik led the team with 18 points, as Cornerstone drops to 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in WHAC play. Road action continues at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 20 at Siena Heights for a tough WHAC test.
Game Flow:
- Mackenzie Stien hit the first bucket of the game for CU, while Jaylee Long hit the first three to give Cornerstone the 7-4 advantage.
- Cornerstone then went on a 9-2 run later in the first that was capped off by a Kennedy Helderop three to double up the Blue Devils 16-8.
- LTU hit a three and Kennedy Helderop added one more layup to lead 18-11 after one.
- An and-one by Mackenzie Stien to start the second quarter gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead at 10, 21-11.
- Lawrence Tech responded with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two at 21-19.
- The Blue Devils continued to create turnovers and chipped away taking their first lead of the second quarter with just 1:12 to play and led 27-25 at the break. Cornerstone was held to just 20% from the field in the second quarter.
- Lawrence Tech came out of the half firing, using an 8-0 run in the first five minutes to go on top by 10.
- Jaylee Long hit a huge three to cut it back to a seven-point deficit, but it did not last long as the Blue Devils increased their lead to as large as 16 and led by 13 after three, 48-35.
- Again LTU got the better of CU to start a quarter, scoring the first five points of the fourth to go on top 53-35.
- An Ellen Kresge layup and Olivia Kubik three cut it back to 13 quickly though with 7:59 to play.
- Olivia Kubik was unwilling to give this one up, scoring six straight points along with some solid defense that cut the deficit to 10 at 59-49 and forced Lawrence Tech to take a timeout with 3:57 to play.
- It was too little too late for the Golden Eagles as they fell 66-53 to drop to 1-6 on the year.
