Rodriguez sets new career high in Men’s Basketball 82-70 Cornerstone Classic victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Redshirt-senior Christian Rodriguez may be looking for a program assist record, but it was his shot that was the story tonight, setting a new career high with 34 points on 12-19 shooting and 7-11 from deep. CU earned an 82-70 victory in game one of the Cornerstone Classic to improve to 4-0 overall this season. The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the championship of the Cornerstone Classic vs. (RV) Olivet Nazarene at 3 p.m. 

What you need to know? 
  • Graceland got off to a strong start with a 12-3 run to begin the game that saw a big three from Zachary Lattimer. 
  • Cornerstone responded with a 9-0 run capped off by a Drew Knickerbocker three that tied the game at 12 with 13:56 to play in the first half. 
  • The two teams then traded points, as Christian Rodriguez got hot from three hitting three straight to give CU the 28-26 edge. 
  • Carter Nyp and Trent Summerfield then joined the three-point parade to bring the CU lead to six at 38-32. 
  • Cornerstone held the ball for the final possession and Christian Rodriguez hit a floater that gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of seven at the half, 41-34. 
  • Christian Rodriguez continued his assault early in the second half, hitting yet another three to increase the lead to double figures, 50-39. 
  • The lead increased to 17 on a 7-1 run that saw a few trips to the free throw line and made it 61-44 with 11:01 to play. 
  • The three-ball continued to fall as CU was relentless with Trent Summerfield, Jonny Strube, and Christian Rodriguez each hitting one on three straight possessions for the team's largest lead of the game 70-51. 
  • Graceland chipped away in the final eight minutes, but it was too little too late as Cornerstone stayed undefeated and won 82-70. 
 
By the Numbers 
34/7 – Christian Rodriguez recorded a new career high with 34 points and tied a career high with seven made threes. 
13 – Jonny Strube led the team with 13 rebounds, a new career high, six of those being offensive boards. 
47 – Cornerstone has hit 47 total threes' in their first four games and are shooting 31.3% from deep. 
19/11 – Carter Nyp recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
