Women’s Basketball falls in nail-biter to defending WHAC Champions Rochester

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a back-and-forth physical offensive game, Cornerstone was unable to hold on to a 17-point third quarter lead, falling 91-87 vs. Rochester. CU saw multiple career highs on the day, including a season high 87 points. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-9, 0-6 WHAC as they will play their final home game of the 2021 portion of the season vs. Roosevelt on Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. 
 
Game Flow:
  • The first field goals of the game were not scored until just over three minutes into the contest as RU's Lauren Wynn hit a layup and a quick response was made by CU's Kaycee Sluiter
  • Rochester called an early timeout after some substitution confusion, trailing 4-3. 
  • Olivia Kubik came off the bench and got hot from three, hitting two in a row to give CU a 10-5 advantage. 
  • Madison Fulks added a first quarter triple as Cornerstone erupted for 15 points in a two-minute span. 
  • Early foul trouble for CU allowed Rochester to climb back in the game as the Warriors hit 9-11 free throws to cut the Cornerstone lead to four after one at 26-22. 
  • More Warrior free throws allowed Rochester to tie the game at 26 with 8:58 to play in the second quarter. 
  • Trailing 31-29, Cornerstone went on a 7-0 run that saw layups from Audrey Dryer and Olivia Kubik and a three from Ellen Kresge to regain the lead 36-31. 
  • The energy continued to fuel CU with another huge run, as Maddison Fulks hit a three that brought the Golden Eagle lead back to seven, 42-35. 
  • CU ended the half on a 20-7 run to hold a 49-38 edge at the half. 
  • A Cornerstone team that has struggled all year in third quarters got off to a great start with a 6-2 run capped off by a Mackenzie Stien layup to increase the lead to the largest of the game at 15. 
  • The strong third quarter continued with Madison Fulks fourth three of the game to increase the edge to 17 at 62-45. 
  • After a CU timeout, Rochester went on a 10-0 run to cut the Golden Eagle lead to seven at 62-55. 
  • With 1:15 to play in the third Rochester called a timeout trailing 66-63. 
  • The press of the Warriors caused the Golden Eagles issues to end the third, as Rochester came all the way back to tie the game at 68 after three. 
  • Rochester hit a layup to begin the fourth to take their first lead of the second half, 70-68. 
  • Mackenzie Stien and Stephanie Ainsworth each hit layups before a Golden Eagle timeout to regain a four-point edge 80-76 with 6:25 to play. 
  • After the timeout, CU added four more points to complete an 8-0 run and lead 84-76. 
  • Two big and one buckets for the Warriors helped them cut the Cornerstone lead back to two at 86-84 with 2:30 to play. 
  • After a missed layup, Rochester got a big offensive board and called timeout with 43 seconds to play leading CU 88-87. In the timeout, Rochester drew up a great play to get a layup and lead 90-87.
  • Cornerstone turned the ball over with a chance to tie, which led to a 91-87 loss to the defending WHAC Champions. 
 
By the numbers:
25 – Mackenzie Stien recorded a Golden Eagle career high with 25 points to lead the team. 
7 – Maddison Fulks (4) and Olivia Kubik (3) each had a career high in three balls and combined for seven of the teams eight on the day. 
7 – Kennedy Helderop recorded a career high seven assists in the loss. 
 
What's next? 
Cornerstone will conclude the home slate in the 2021 portion of the season with a non-conference game vs. Roosevelt on Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m.
