GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles ended a six-game skid with a huge non-conference victory vs. Roosevelt on Wednesday evening, behind 12 points from
Stephanie Ainsworth and 11 more from
Maddison Fulks. Cornerstone earns their second win of the year to move to 2-9 overall as they get ready for a nine-game road trip starting at Lourdes on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip.
Game Flow:
- Ellen Kresge hit a three to open the scoring getting the Golden Eagles off to a hot start.
- Maddison Fulks capped off an early 10-2 run for CU with a three of her own with 4:21 to play in the first quarter.
- After CU increased the lead to eight, Roosevelt climbed back into the game cutting it to as low as four. Mackenzie Stien hit a layup to end the first and give Cornerstone a 16-10 edge.
- To start the second quarter, Roosevelt hit a three that cut it to three. They later took their first lead with 8:02 to play in the half on a CeCe Pope jumper, 19-18.
- Stephanie Ainsworth hit a huge and one that quickly tied the game back up at 21.
- The Golden Eagle three-point shooting got hot again as Maddison Fulks and Jaylee Long each hit one in the final two minutes to put Cornerstone on top 31-29 at the half.
- To begin the third, the two teams traded buckets as the score sat tied at 39 with 1:39 left.
- CU went on a huge 7-0 run to end the period highlighted by an Olivia Kubik three that gave the Golden Eagles the 46-39 edge.
- The run continued into the fourth, as Stephanie Ainsworth hit a layup to make it a 10-point game.
- Maddison Fulks and Mackenzie Stien combined for five straight points as CU held a game high 13-point edge with 6:22 to play.
- Cornerstone used the full-court press for the end of the third and all of the fourth, but it caused foul trouble in the fourth allowing Roosevelt to get back in it with nine made free throws that cut it to a one-point game.
- Stephanie Ainsworth hit another big and-one with 1:25 to play, bringing the advantage back to four at 63-59.
- In the final minute and a half, Cornerstone was able to get a game stealing turnover as they hit enough free throws to hold on to a 65-61 victory.
