GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Colten Covington highlighted a great day for the Golden Eagles with athletes primarily at the Aquinas Invite, while distance runners and race walkers competed at Indiana Tech. Covington ran a time of 14:40.94 in the 5000m for the fastest time in the NAIA. CU saw a total of 12 PR's today with six of those being from the men's and women's distance runners. Cornerstone will compete in the WHAC Championships next weekend back at Aquinas with events beginning on Saturday, February 20.
Men's Results
A few Golden Eagles competed at the Indiana Tech Invite to start the day.
Ben Hofstra began the day with a PR and national qualifying mark in the 3000m racewalk of 13:26.58. This mark moves him to fifth all-time on CU's indoor list and led him to victory at Indiana Tech.
At Aquinas, sophomore
Josh DeVries made his high jump debut and cleared 1.91m to crack 10
th all-time on CU's indoor list. DeVries finished second in the event.
For the second consecutive week,
Owen Woltjer ran a PR in the 1000m of 2:32.79. This gave Woltjer second at the event and kept him in eighth place in program history.
In the long jump, the multis duo of
Peter Willcome and
Carter Sabin recorded identical PR's of 6.66m. The two athletes tied for first at the AQ Invite and are now tied for third in CU program history in the event.
The distance events ran at Indiana Tech began with a dominant performance from
Colten Covington in the 5000m. Covington ran a PR time of 14:40.94 that is currently the fastest time in the NAIA and third on CU's all-time indoor list.
Luke Pohl also ran the 5,000m and finished with a PR of 14:56.97 to claim eighth in program history.
Zach Theeuwes and
Luke Koopman joined their teammates with PR's in the event with times of 15:03.67 and 15:25.00 respectively.
Peter Willcome continued his strong day with his debut in the triple jump. He jumped 12.72m which ranks him ninth in program history and second in the event.
Women's Results
Anna VanTubergen whipped another PR throw in the weight throw at Aquinas, going 15.48m. She finished second in the event and remains fifth in CU program history for the event.
Over at Indiana Tech the pair of
Nygia Pollard and
Haley Nieuwkoop recorded monster PR's in the 5000m. Pollard schorched the track with a time of 17:23.61 which is the second fastest in the NAIA this season and second all-time on CU's indoor list. Nieuwkoop improved her PR with a time of 17:40.23 but remains fourth all-time in program history. Pollard and Nieuwkoop finished second and third in the event, with the only athlete to beat them being Cornerstone's very own
Kelli Smith who is running unattached for the indoor season. Smith recorded a time of 16:50.38 which is by far the fastest in the NAIA.
Back at Aquinas,
Ashley Verplank tied her PR in the pole vault, clearing 3.42m. This mark was good for fourth in the event.

Cornerstone will compete in the 2021 WHAC Indoor Championships next weekend back at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center at Aquinas.
