GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles tie their best start since the 2007 season and move to a perfect 10-0 after a dominant 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 sweep of NAIA no. 19 Madonna Friday evening. Cornerstone's defense was in full force as the duo of
Bailey Cummings and
Patsy Morris combined for 36 digs and the duo of
Brooke Nicholson and
Jackie Stanko combined for eight blocks. Cornerstone will continue play at Siena Heights on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Madonna – 0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22)
- The Crusaders took an early 7-4 lead in set one on a kill from Tauri Hintz.
- Cornerstone responded with a 4-0 run that saw an ace and a kill from Bailey Cummings to take the lead 8-7.
- After Madonna came back to take a 14-13 advantage, Cornerstone saw another 4-0 run highlighted by a pair of kills from setter Kayla Clark.
- CU scored five of the last seven points, as an attack error by MU on the Mia Kahler serve gave CU the 25-20 set one win.
- Patsy Morris recorded an incredible dig that landed for a kill to give Cornerstone an early lead in set two.
- Cornerstone went up 11-6 after Rylie Walters, Alexis Angus, and Jackie Stanko stuffed the attack from Madonna's DJ Sargent.
- The lead increased to as high as seven in set two after a Bailey Cummings kill made it 18-11.
- Madonna was able to respond to cut the deficit all the way down to two, but it was too little too late as Cornerstone was able to hold on and win 25-21.
- MU had control early in set three, with an 11-8 lead after an attack error from Rylie Walters.
- Bailey Cummings continued her strong day leading a Golden Eagle 4-0 run with two services aces late in the set that gave CU the 16-14 edge.
- Madonna responded to tie things at 17.
- Another Golden Eagle 4-0 run put them on top 21-17 with three straight kills from Alexis Angus.
- Bailey Cummings put the ball away for the final kill of the match, giving Cornerstone the 25-22 set two victory and the match sweep.

13/8 – Cornerstone held the 2019 kill leader in Madonna's Jodie Kelly to a negative hitting percentage through the first two sets, as she finished with 13 kills and eight errors in the match.

Bailey Cummings recorded her fourth double-digit kill match of the season along with a season high 15 digs.

Patsy Morris led the team with 21 digs.
30 –
Kayla Clark recorded 30 assists in the match.
6-2 – Cornerstone had six aces and blocks to Madonna's two each on the match.

Cornerstone has an extra day off before returning to the road as they will take on Siena Heights on Wednesday, February 24 at 5 p.m. for the beginning of another two-game road stretch.
