MARION, Ind. – Head Coach
Andy Wright and the Cornerstone track & field team saw quite the shuffling of events this week as they made a last-minute return to the Indiana Wesleyan Invite after weather postponed team action at Tiffin University in Ohio. Despite the changes, the Cornerstone distance runners put up strong marks, highlighted by the men's DMR ranking seventh in the NAIA with a time of 10:29.99. The Golden Eagles will compete locally for the first time this season on Saturday at Aquinas for the Aquinas College Invite.
Men's Results
The men's DMR was the first event run for the Golden Eagles at IWU. The grouping of
Owen Woltjer,
Jackson Lincoln,
Nate Vruggink, and
Luke Pohl competed for the first time in the DMR this season and finished third with a time of 10:29.99. CU saw splits that went: Woltjer – 3:11, Lincoln – 51.4, Vruggink – 2:01, and Pohl 4:25. As it stands right now, the DMR mark ranks seventh in the NAIA putting them in position to qualify for nationals if the season ended today.
Jackson Lincoln later competed in the 400m and finished 15
th with a time of 54.25, falling two seconds short of his indoor PR.
The night ended with a first through fourth place sweep in the men's 1000m.
Owen Woltjer won the event with a 2:34.13, followed by
Luke Pohl at 2:35.55,
Nate Vruggink at 2:35.77, and
Grant Gayan at 2:36.45. Woltjer and Pohl's marks are good for eighth and ninth all-time on CU's indoor list.
Women's Results
Haley Neiuwkoop and
Annika Shoemaker were the first Golden Eagle women to compete, running in the 3k. Neiuwkoop ran a PR time of 10:32.33, continuing her assault this season. She finished fifth in the event and has cracked the top-10 list in CU program history, ranking eighth all-time with the mark. Shoemaker also ran a PR in the event by two seconds, at 10:41.16 to finish seventh in the event.
Morgan Luedy was not with the rest of the athletes at IWU, but was able to compete in a pentathlon at Tiffin University in Ohio. She totaled 3,130 points which does not beat her score from two weeks ago recorded at the Friends University Invite.
