GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles made it seven straight wins to start the year, with an impressive sweep over the defending WHAC Champion Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on home court on Tuesday evening. CU won 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, dominating at the service line and on the block to improve to 7-0, 3-0 WHAC. Cornerstone will go back on the road on Friday as they take on Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m. in Lima.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – Lawrence Tech (25-16, 25-20, 25-21)
- Cornerstone got out to a 4-0 set one lead with a Rylie Walters service ace and an Alexis Angus kill.
- Lawrence Tech brought it to 6-5, but CU immediately responded with another 4-0 run on Kayla Clark's serve.
- The Blue Devils could not get out of their own way in set one, committing 12 attack errors to just seven kills as Cornerstone coasted to a 25-16 set victory.
- CU changed up the starting lineup in set two, as Hannah Klepal and Kaylee Dykema got into the rotation.
- Back-to-back kills by Bailey Cummings in the beginning of set two gave the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
- Lawrence Tech was able to hold the advantage for much of set two, with a three-point advantage at 18-15.
- Cornerstone responded with a 9-1 run late in set two, highlighted by a pair of Rylie Walters service aces to win set two 25-20.
- The Blue Devils got out to a 6-2 advantage to start set three with back-to-back kills from Nicole Whan.
- Cornerstone responded to tie things at seven after an attack error by LTU.
- CU then rattled off a 4-0 run that saw kills from Olivia Keelean and Jackie Stanko to take control 11-8.
- Lawrence Tech was able to respond and tie things, but they never regained the lead as Cornerstone scored five of the last six points and won the match on a Rylie Walters kill, 25-21.
