GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference released a record breaking 28 weekly award honors this week due to the high volume of athletic competition happening at the same time, and Cornerstone saw five awards earned from Golden Eagle athletes. The women's volleyball team swept the honors with
Bailey Cummings,
Kayla Clark, and
Patsy Morris winning attacker, setter, and defender of the week respectively. Freshman
Nate Kaercher earned the WHAC Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer and
Kelli Smith returned to the award list as the outdoor track & field Runner of the Week in her first meet of the 2021 season.
Bailey Cummings
Senior
Bailey Cummings earned WHAC Attacker of the Week for the first time in her career after leading CU in kills in two of the teams three matches this season with 14 vs. Aquinas and 13 vs. Siena Heights. Bailey led an offense that swept all three games this week as CU hosted three of the top five teams in the WHAC this week. She also cracked 1,000 career kills vs. Siena Heights and has 201 on the year to lead the team.
Kayla Clark
For the fourth time this season (tied for the WHAC high with Kali Crawford), senior setter
Kayla Clark was named the WHAC Setter of the Week. Clark totaled 98 assists in the three sweeps this week with 30+ in each match for an average of 10.98 a game. She currently ranks second in the WHAC by just .1 in sets per game this season. Clark has 668 total assists this season in 19 games.
Patsy Morris
For the third time this season, sophomore libero
Patsy Morris has earned the WHAC Defender of the Week. Morris totaled 46 digs in three matches for an average of 5.11 a game with a week high 19 in the home sweep of Indiana Tech. Morris was another Golden Eagle who hit a career milestone, surpassing 1,000 career digs vs. Indiana Tech as she has 352 digs this season.
Nate Kaercher
Freshman forward earned the WHAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career after providing all of the Golden Eagle offense in the teams lone game this week. Kaercher scored two goals, one in each half, in a 2-1 win vs. Rochester this past Wednesday to help CU move to 4-3-1 on the year. Kaercher is now the team leader with six points and the only player to record multiple goals this season.
Kelli Smith
The veteran
Kelli Smith finds her name back in the WHAC weekly honors in her return to a Golden Eagle uniform, as she broke a school record in the 3000m with a mark of 9:38.20. She also recorded a PR and the second fastest time in program history in the 1500m at 4:35.53. Smith was unable to compete in the indoor season or cross country season as she has used all four years of eligibilty, but she will compete with the team in the outdoor season this spring as she was unable to last year with the cancelation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
