Women’s Volleyball closes WHAC play with four set victory at Concordia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For the second time in four days Cornerstone took on WHAC foe Concordia, this time on the road winning in four sets, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-12. The win concludes the Golden Eagles WHAC regular season at 15-1 as they are now 20-2 overall and have now won eight straight contests. CU ends the regular season with a pair of non-conference matches, starting with a road test at NAIA number three Indiana Wesleyan on Friday at 6 p.m. 

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 3 Concordia - 1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-12)
  • After Cornerstone took a 7-3 lead early in set one, Concordia followed with a 5-1 run to tie things at eight. 
  • Cornerstone responded with a 4-0 run that saw a kill from Alexis Angus and a block from Alexis Angus and Kayla Clark to lead 12-8. 
  • Concordia later went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead 18-16 and force Cornerstone into a timeout. 
  • A kill from from Abigail Austin helped CUAA hold on and win set one 25-23. Each team had 14 kills in set one. 
  • Early in set two it was tied at four, but once again the Cardinals showed some fight using a 4-1 run to get on top 8-5 with a Kayla Peters kill. 
  • A block by Brooke Nicholson and Kayla Clark was part of a 7-2 Golden Eagle run that gave them a 12-11 edge. 
  • Each team went on back-to-back 3-0 runs to tie things at 16 all. 
  • Cornerstone was able to pull away, scoring four of the last five points powered by two Bailey Cummings kills to win set two 25-21 and tie the match at one. 
  • CU and CUAA saw eight ties early in set three as it sat tied at 11 all. 
  • A pair of assisted blocks from Alexis Angus/Jackie Stanko and Alexis Angus/Olivia Keelean helped CU to a 3-0 run that gave them a 14-11 edge. 
  • CU did not relinquish the set three lead with a 7-1 run to end it and win 25-17. Brooke Nicholson had five consecutive kills in the run. 
  • Set four was all Cornerstone, scoring the first 10 points on the Kayla Clark serve. 
  • The block would prove to be dominant for CU in the final set with five of the 15 recorded in the match coming in the fourth as they coasted to a 25-12 victory. 
 
By the Numbers 
29 – Patsy Morris recorded a season second best 29 digs. 
12 – Brooke Nicholson led the team with 12 kills and also hit a dominant .407. 
44 – Kayla Clark recorded 44 assists in the win. 
 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone will play their toughest opponent of the year as they take on NAIA number three Indiana Wesleyan on the road this Friday at 6 p.m.
