MARION, Ind. – (21) Cornerstone traveled to Marion, Indiana to take on (3) Indiana Wesleyan in a clash of top 25 teams and after a slow start, CU came back to win sets three and four before ultimately falling in five. This was just the third five set match of the year for the Golden Eagles and first in non-conference play as they fall to 20-3 on the year. The Golden Eagles return home for a 1 p.m. game tomorrow vs. Saint Francis of Illinois for senior day.
Game Recap: Indiana Wesleyan – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (14-25, 23-25, 26-24, 26-24, 10-15)
- Indiana Wesleyan began set one on an 11-1 run capped off by a service ace.
- A block from Jackie Stanko capped off a 3-0 run as CU chipped away to make it 20-12.
- Courtney Watkins recorded a kill for IWU to win set one, 25-14.
- Cornerstone took a 4-1 lead early in set two with a kill from Bailey Cummings.
- The two teams continued to trade runs as things sat tied at 16.
- After it was tied at 23 all, Indiana Wesleyan recorded two blocks to win set two 25-23.
- The block was big for Cornerstone in set three as Jackie Stanko and Alexis Angus recorded one to give CU a 15-12 edge.
- After IWU took a 23-21 advantage, CU rallied to win five of the last six points winning set three on a block by Jackie Stanko and Brooke Nicholson, 26-24.
- Once again, CU trailed late in set four as they were down 18-16, but they used a 4-0 run that saw two Brooke Nicholson kills to take the 20-18 lead.
- Kills from Brooke Nicholson and Olivia Keelean then sealed set four, 26-24.
- IWU scored the first four points of set five with a pair of kills from Rachel Klitzing.
- Another 3-0 run gave the Wildcats an 8-3 advantage.
- CU fought back, but was unable to overcome the deficit falling 15-10 in set five on a ball handling error.
