Baseball records a pair of walk-off winners in season opening double-header

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles opened the season in thrilling fashion, recording a pair of walk-off winners in a home double-header vs. Saint Xavier. Daniel Freeman was the hero in the 7-6 game one victory as CU came all the way back from six runs down, and Austin Hurt was the hero in the 3-2 game two victory with a walk-off two RBI single. Cornerstone is 2-0 to begin the year and they will return to action tomorrow vs. Saint Xavier with a noon double-header.  

Game One – Cornerstone – 7 Saint Xavier - 6 
  • Andrew VanDyke got a ground ball out to get the first batter out of the game, but after that the Cougars recorded four straight hits to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • VanDyke then lost his command as two bases loaded walks came in to make it 4-0. Michael Foster then came in and pitched and gave up a two RBI single to Declan Smyth to make it 6-0 at the end of the top of the first. 
  • Cornerstone responded to score two in the bottom of the first as Daniel Freeman tripled in his first at bat to score Josh Magley and Jordan Wenzel and make it 6-2. 
  • In the fourth inning, Cornerstone was able to find the scoreboard again with a Grant Young single that scored Landon Poll and made it 6-3. 
  • In the sixth, Cornerstone continued to chip away, as Jordan Wenzel singled to score Samuel Bussler and make it 6-4. 
  • Austin Hurt then hit a single to score two more runs and tie the game 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Evan Shirley made an outstanding play to keep things tied in the top of the seventh, securing a pop out and throwing the runner out at home with the bases loaded that ended the inning. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, CU got two runners on but were unable to score forcing the season opener to extra innings. 
  • Caden Ritsema came in and pitched the top of the eighth. After loading the bases, he struck out a the SXU DH Tyler Hedman to keep the game tied. 
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Eric Bradberry hit a lead-off double to get things started. Josh Magley came in to pinch run for Bradberry and was able to advance to third. With runners on the corners, SXU brought the left fielder in to have an extra infielder. Daniel Freeman was able to hit a ball out of the infield and won the Golden Eagles the game as Magley came home to score on a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • CU completed the comeback after trailing 6-0 at the end of the first inning to win game one 7-6. 
 
Game Two – Cornerstone – 3 Saint Xavier - 2 
  • Adam Hotovy, the true freshman, got the start in game two and struck out two batters in his first collegiate inning. 
  • Daniel Freeman continued his strong opening day with an RBI single that scored Jordan Wenzel in the bottom of the first to give CU the 1-0 lead. 
  • In the third inning, Saint Xavier was able to respond after a single and hit by pitch. Joe Rycerz later singled up the middle to score two runs and give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. 
  • The next three innings were scoreless as both starters in Nick Crowe and Adam Hotovy went five innings, striking out a combined nine batters. 
  • Colin Schwartz came in as relief for Cornerstone and did an outstanding job going two innings unharmed allowing just one hit. 
  • After an error by SXU in the bottom of the seventh, CU took advantage as Austin Hurt was the walk-off hero in game two with a two RBI single, scoring Grant Young and Samuel Bussler to win game two, 3-2. 

By the Numbers 
3 – Jordan Wenzel and Samuel Bussler each had a team high three hits, while Wenzel also scored three times. 
4 – The two walk-off heros of Daniel Freeman and Austin Hurt each had four RBI for eight of the teams 10 on the day. 
0 – Michael Foster, Chandler McKinney, Caden Ritsema, and Colin Schwartz all did not give up an earned run out of the bullpen today. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will play two more seven inning games vs. SXU tomorrow starting at noon.
