GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles continued their season on Saturday with another doubleheader against Saint Xavier. The Cougars prevailed 9-6 in game one, while Cornerstone used a seven-run 2nd inning en route to an 11-4 win in game two. The split brings Cornerstone's record to 3-1 on the season. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to return to action on March 20 when they travel to Siena Heights to begin conference play.
Game One: Cornerstone 6 – Saint Xavier 9
- The Cougars had a two out rally to bring in two runs in the top of the first inning.
- Grant Young got the Golden Eagles on the board with a bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but three CU runners were left on base at the end of the inning.
- Austin Hurt and Daniel Freeman had back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead.
- The Cougars quickly regained the lead by plating two runs in the top of the third to claim a 4-3 advantage.
- SXU broke the game open by doubling their score in the fourth inning thanks in part to three CU errors, making it 8-3.
- Evan Shirley had a two-RBI double to right field to cut the Cougars lead to 8-5.
- Austin Hurt hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 8-6 SXU.
- Saint Xavier tacked on another unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 9-6, which would prove to be the final score.
- Jared Riley pitched three innings in relief, racking up six strikeouts while surrendering just three hits and one earned run.
Game Two: Cornerstone 11 – Saint Xavier 4
- The Cougars tallied three hits in the first inning, but CU was able to limit the damage
- Jordan Wenzel and Austin Hurt had back-to-back RBIs in the first inning. Hurt would eventually come around to score thanks to a balk to give Cornerstone a 3-1 lead after the first.
- Wenzel and Hurt once again started the scoring in the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles.
- Isaac Tayes drove both of them in with a two-RBI double to right field to make it 7-1.
- Evan Shirley continued the scoring with an RBI single to make it 8-1.
- Eric Bradberry and Jordan Wenzel capped off the seven-run inning with back-to-back bases-loaded hit by pitches, giving CU a commanding 10-1 lead.
- Saint Xavier brought in three runs in the fifth inning to make it 10-4.
- Eric Bradberry capped off the scoring with an RBI in the sixth inning, making it 11-4.
- Grant Young earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts in four innings of work while surrendering just four hits and one earned run.
- Zach Brog closed out the game on the mound in the seventh inning, surrendering just one hit and striking out two.
