GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After an incredible 12-0 start to the season, the Golden Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Chicagolands Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Saint Xavier. CU fell in four sets: 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 26-28 as the outside hitting SXU duo caused trouble for the Golden Eagle defense. Cornerstone is now 12-1, 8-0 WHAC on the year as they return to conference action tomorrow at (19) Madonna at 1 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – Saint Xavier (25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 26-28)
- Cornerstone began set one on a 5-0 run that saw a pair of kills from Bailey Cummings.
- Saint Xavier responded with a 6-1 run later in the set to tie things at 13.
- The Golden Eagles were able to rebound however, ending the set on a 7-2 run that had three Alexis Angus kills to win set one 25-20.
- The SXU attack was dominant early in set two, using a 6-1 run to take a 12-8 edge. The run saw four kills by three different attackers for the Cougars.
- Cornerstone cut the deficit to two on multiple occasions throughout the set, but Saint Xavier block sealed the set two win for the Cougars, 25-22.
- SXU took the momentum into set three, taking a 7-4 lead on a Nadia Atton kill.
- A 6-0 Cougar run later in the set increased the lead to as large as seven.
- Cornerstone responded with a couple 3-0 runs, but Nadia Atton used an ace to win set three for the Cougars, 25-18.
- In a must win set for CU, Bailey Cummings recorded two early service aces to give Cornerstone a 5-2 advantage.
- SXU responded with a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set, 8-7.
- After Cornerstone regained the lead 14-11, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run that saw three kills from Jessica Belseth to go up 17-14.
- Cornerstone came back to tie things, but two kills ended the set in favor of the Cougars, 28-26 giving CU their first loss of the season, 3-1.

.343 – Cornerstone hit .343 in set one and then was held to under .220 in the remaining three sets.
22/20 – The SXU dynamic duo of Nadia Atton and Jessica Belseth tallied 42 of the teams 55 kills on the day.

Alexis Angus recorded a new season high with 16 kills in the loss.
