LIVONIA, Mich. – The Golden Eagles dropped their second straight match and first conference match in a five-set thriller at number 19 Madonna. Cornerstone fell 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 13-15 in just their second five-set match of the season. CU is now 12-2, 8-1 WHAC on the year as they will have some time off before hosting Northwestern Ohio on Friday at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Madonna – 3 Cornerstone – 2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 13-15)
- Kayla Clark recorded two service aces early in set one to tie things at five.
- The two teams traded points until late in set one, when Madonna went on a 6-0 run to go up 24-18. Two service aces and two Jodie Kelly kills powered the run.
- After Rylie Walters recorded a kill and Madonna had an attack error, Jodie Kelly finished off set one for Madonna, 25-20.
- Cornerstone found themselves behind a lot throughout set two, trailing 15-12 after an Olivia Sweeney service ace.
- CU trailed 22-21, but scored four straight points to end the set and win 25-22. Alexis Angus recorded a pair of kills in the 4-0 run.
- Cornerstone took the momentum into set three, getting out to a 15-9 lead behind two more Rylie Walters service aces.
- Another 5-0 run late in the set gave CU their largest set victory, 25-17 and put them on top two sets to one in the match.
- Madonna went on a 4-0 run early in set four to get on top 9-5.
- The Crusaders then saw an 8-0 run to take their biggest set lead of the match at 17-8. Madonna recorded six kills in the run.
- Cornerstone battled back but a Ryan Castle kill ended set four in favor of Madonna, 25-18.
- Cornerstone went to a fifth set for just the second time this season and at the midway point led 8-7 after an Olivia Keelean ace.
- A big block from Brooke Nicholson and Bailey Cummings then increased the CU edge to 10-8.
- Madonna responded with a four-point run that once again saw two kills from Jodie Kelly.
- The run was enough to seal the five-set victory for the Crusaders as Kacie Stoneburner recorded the final kill to down Cornerstone 15-13.
