Clutch hitting gives Baseball pair of wins over Grace

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Samuel Bussler and Jordan Wenzel go down as the Golden Eagle heroes at the plate on Tuesday afternoon each recording clutch hits to give CU a pair of wins vs. Grace College. Bussler hit a walk-off single in game one to win 3-2, and Wenzel hit a two-run bomb in the sixth inning of game two to win 5-3. Cornerstone is now 5-1 on the year as they will prepare for a potential weekend road trip with more details to be announced soon.

Game One – Cornerstone – 3 Grace - 2
  • The Lancers got on the board first with an RBI single to left from the nine hitter Patrick Danforth to take a 1-0 lead. Clayton Shwiebert in his first collegiate start did a good job getting out of the inning holding Grace to just one run.
  • Back-to-back triples from JC Salinas and Jordan Wenzel got CU on the board and tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
  • After two innings of work from starter Clayton Schwiebert, Brendan Miller came in to pitch and despite facing trouble in each of the first two innings he was able to get out of it and keep the game tied 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Landon Poll tripled but Grace made a great defensive play on a hard-hit ball from Grant Young to get out of the inning and keep the game tied.
  • Cornerstone took their first lead of the game as Austin Hurt hit a single over the first base bag that scored Jordan Wenzel to make it 2-1.
  • The Grace DH Houston Haney came in to pitch and got the Lancers out of the sixth with just the one CU run scored striking out Evan Shirley with the bases loaded.
  • Houston Haney then helped himself out with a quick Grace response in the top of the seventh with an RBI double that tied the game back up at two.
  • Cornerstone would not be done however as JC Salinas and Jordan Wenzel each singled putting Austin Hurt up to bat. Hurt was intentionally walked which gave Samuel Bussler the chance to get the walk-off in game one, scoring Salinas to win 3-2.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 5 Grace - 3
  • After a pair of early errors in the top of the first, Grace was able to score a run to take a 1-0 lead on game two starter Andrew Van Dyke.
  • Eric Bradberry ended the top of the second inning with a great gun down of the stealing Grace runner making the throw from his knees to keep the score 1-0.
  • In the third, Sam Newkirk hit a two out two-run home run off the reliever Jared Riley to increase the Lancer lead to 3-0.
  • After a walk earned by Landon Poll he later got Cornerstone on the board scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
  • Another great play from Grace at third base ended the bottom of the third with a double play to keep the score 3-1.
  • CU continued to chip away in the bottom of the fourth as Grant Young hit an RBI double to score Samuel Bussler and make it 3-2.
  • Cornerstone continued to chip away as Jordan Wenzel hit his third career HR and first of the season to give the Golden Eagles their first lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • JC Salinas hit his second triple of the day as Adam Hotovy scored in a pinch running situation to make it 5-3.
  • Chandler McKinney returned to the mound in the top of the seventh for his second inning of work and despite giving up a base hit was able to earn the save as CU won 5-3.
