GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a rain out on Saturday, Cornerstone and Concordia was able to get in their conference double-header as the two teams that currently sit on top of the WHAC standings split the pair with Concordia winning game one 6-1, and Cornerstone winning game two 7-6.
JC Salinas was the hero of game two with a walk-off winner in the bottom of the ninth after Concordia rallied off four in the the top of the inning to tie the game. Cornerstone will hit the road on Saturday to take on Rochester for another WHAC double-header starting at 1 p.m.
Game One – Concordia – 6 Cornerstone - 1
- Concordia put pressure on CU early, as Adam Purdy came around to score on a ground out after he had singled, stole a base, and advanced on an error in the top of the first.
- Starting pitcher Dylan VandenBerg did a great job getting out of the first however, allowing just one run.
- Both starters than settled in as the score would stay 1-0 until the fourth.
- In the fourth, Vann Acker homered to left field to give the Cardinals to a 2-1 edge.
- George Cutler responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with a solo HR of his own that cut the deficit back to just one run.
- In the sixth, the CUAA lead went back to two on an RJ Bortle sacrifice fly.
- After a walk to lead-off the seventh, Dylan VandenBerg's outing would come to an end as he was replaced by Brendan Miller. An RBI single and a run scoring on a double-play would give the Cardinals the 5-1 advantage at the end of the seventh.
- Concordia added one more run in the ninth on a single up the middle to make it 6-1.
- The Golden Eagle offense could get nothing going, as Concordia starter Joe Tany pitched a five hit, one run complete game to give CUAA the 6-1 game one victory.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 7 Concordia - 6
- In game two, the Golden Eagles got to the NAIA ERA leader Tyson Kleinfelter early as Jordan Wenzel hit a solo HR in the first to give CU a 1-0 advantage.
- Isaac Tayes hit a two RBI single up the middle in the third to add two more runs to the CUAA starter's totals and make it 3-0.
- Chandler McKinney was flawless on the mound for CU going four innings and allowing just two hits to the Cardinals as both starters exited after four innings pitched in a 3-0 game.
- Cornerstone added one more run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
- Concordia got their first run in the seventh on an RBI single, but Cornerstone immediately responded in the bottom of the inning with an Austin Hurt sacrifice fly that scored Jordan Wenzel.
- The trading of runs trend would continue in the eighth as each team scored a run to make it 6-2 headed into the final inning.
- Jared Riley relieved Caden Ritsema after some struggles in the top of the ninth and the Cardinals were able to hit a pair of HR's tying the game. Calvin Syrja hit a three-run shot which was followed by a solo shot from Jordan Sherm.
- Cornerstone refused to go down however, as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, and JC Salinas was the hero with a walk-off single to win game two 7-6.
