UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – After some postponements in WHAC play, the Golden Eagles scheduled a last minute nine-inning game at Saginaw Valley State and ultimately fell 14-6. CU gave up eight runs in the first three innings that was too much to overcome, as the team falls to 14-9 on the year. Cornerstone will return to WHAC play on Friday when they travel to UNOH for a 1 p.m. double-header.
Game Recap: Saginaw Valley State – 14 Cornerstone - 6
- Saginaw Valley got off to a hot start, as a lead-off walk came around to score on an RBI single. SVSU then recorded a pair of RBI doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the first.
- After two innings of work, starter Adam Hotovy was replaced giving up three runs.
- Andrew VanDyke replaced him in the third and saw similar struggles, giving up the five runs and five hits to give Saginaw Valley the 8-0 advantage.
- In the fourth Todd Paperd hit a sacrifice fly to score another run and make it 9-0.
- Cornerstone found the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning, with a double to right field from Austin Hurt that scored Jordan Wenzel.
- Later in the inning Landon Poll singled to score Hurt and make it 9-2.
- In the bottom of the fifth, SVSU got one of the runs back, scoring on an RBI groundout from Martin Money to make it 10-2.
- Cornerstone saw their best offensive production in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs on RBI walks to cut the deficit to 10-5.
- More pitching struggles for SVSU allowed Josh Magley to score in the seventh on a wild pitch and make it 10-6.
- SVSU responded with four more runs in the seventh and eighth innings, helped along by some CU errors to earn the 14-6 win over the Golden Eagles.
