GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The number 21 Golden Eagles ended the regular season honoring seven seniors and earning a sweep over Saint Francis of Illinois to conclude the regular season. CU ends the regular year with a 21-3 record and their first outright WHAC Title ever and sixth in program history. Next up, the Golden Eagles will compete in the WHAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday, April 9 as they have been granted a bye in the quarterfinal due to quarantine issues.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – Saint Francis – (25-22, 25-21, 25-22)
- The two teams traded points early, but the block of Saint Francis led to a Saints 4-0 run forcing the Golden Eagles into a timeout trailing 13-9.
- After the timeout, Cornerstone found their rhythm scoring five of the next six points capped off by a Brooke Nicholson block that forced USF into a timeout at 14 all.
- CU trailed 22-20, but a pair of blocks from Cornerstone's Kayla Clark/Jackie Stanko and Bailey Cummings/Alexis Angus helped them regain the lead in set one 23-22.
- USF used their final timeout but it did not matter as Cornerstone scored the final two points of set one with a Bailey Cummings kill and a Saints attack error to win set one 25-22.
- The Saints used a 4-0 run early in set two to take an 8-4 advantage.
- Cornerstone would cut the deficit to just one with an Olivia Keelean kill, but USF again scored three straight to go back on top 12-8 on a Peyton Baird kill.
- Another solo block from Brooke Nicholson helped CU rally to tie things at 17 all.
- Back-to-back kills from Alexis Angus and Bailey Cummings ended set two in favor of CU 25-21.
- Cornerstone got off to a great start in set three, taking a 9-7 advantage and forcing an early USF timeout after a block from Brooke Nicholson and Kayla Clark.
- Saint Francis responded to tie things at 16 after a few Cornerstone errors.
- Jackie Stanko tallied a kill that made it 21-19 in set three and forced USF to use their second timeout.
- Brooke Nicholson secured the set three victory 25-22 with a kill to give the Golden Eagles the match sweep.
