Baseball swept by Cleary

HOWELL, Mich. – The Baseball team hit the road on Tuesday to take on Cleary. The Cougars scored four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings of game one for a 13-1 decision in the first game and then put up 11 runs to defeat Cornerstone 11-5 in game two. The losses bring the Golden Eagles' record to 16-13, 11-7 WHAC with just two doubleheaders to play in the regular season. 

Game one
  • The Cougars hit a trio of RBI singles in the first inning to plate three runs. Cornerstone was able to limit the damage by getting an inning ending double play. 
  • Cornerstone pushed a run home in the second inning when a bases loaded fielders choice off the bat of Eric Bradberry scored Landon Poll to make it 3-1. 
  • Cleary regained the three-run cushion at 4-1 with an RBI double in the second inning.
  • The Cougars tacked on another with a solo home run in the third inning to extend their lead to 5-1. 
  • A grand slam in the fourth inning broke the game open and made it 9-1. 
  • Cleary plated four more runs in the sixth inning to push their lead to 13-1, which would prove to be the final. 

Game two
  • Jordan Wenzel doubled in the first inning and then came home to score off the bat of George Cutler to give Cornerstone their first lead of the day. 
  • That lead quickly disappeared in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run from Cleary.
  • The Cougars doubled their score with two more runs in the third inning to make it 4-1. 
  • Landon Poll blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning. Ben Barnes hit an RBI double shortly thereafter to cut the deficit to just 4-3. 
  • Cleary pushed their lead back up to four by scoring three runs in the fourth inning. 
  • Poll tallied another RBI in the fifth inning with an RBI single to score Jordan Wenzel.
  • The Cougars had their fourth multi-run inning of the game in the sixth when they scored three runs to make it 10-4. 
  • Cleary's 11th run of the game scored thanks to a wild pitch in the seventh inning. 
  • Samuel Bussler led off the ninth inning with a solo home run, but the game ended 11-5 shortly thereafter. 

By the numbers
4 – Joshua Magley had two hits in each game for four on the day. 
2 – Jordan Wenzel had a pair of doubles in game two.
9 – Nine different Cornerstone pitchers saw action today.

What's Next
Cornerstone has just two doubleheaders left in the regular season. The Golden Eagles will travel to Rochester on Thursday and will host Aquinas on Saturday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
