ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Cornerstone responded with a pair of wins at Rochester on Friday evening after the game was rescheduled due to rain. CU won a pitching duel in game one, 4-1 before the offense took over in an 8-4 game two victory. The Golden Eagles head into senior day vs. Aquinas tomorrow with an 18-13, 13-7 WHAC record as they look to end the regular season on a good note.
Game One – Cornerstone – 4 Rochester – 1
- The Golden Eagles found the board first as Jordan Wenzel and Austin Hurt each recorded RBI singles in the second inning to take a 2-0 advantage.
- Caden Ritsema was flawless in the start for CU, giving up just one run in the third on a Rochester RBI double. He completed his day with 6.1 innings pitched, one earned run, and six hits allowed.
- After leading 2-1 most of the game, Cornerstone found an insurance run in the seventh as Samuel Bussler scored on a wild pitch.
- In the ninth, Cornerstone added one more insurance run after George Cutler walked with the bases loaded to score Josh Magley.
- Andrew VanDyke pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit, earning the save to win game one 4-1.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 8 Rochester - 4
- Cornerstone found the scoreboard first again in game two as an error from the Rochester third baseman allowed two runs to score in the third.
- Austin Hurt later singled in the inning to score Jordan Wenzel and give the Golden Eagles the 3-0 advantage.
- Cornerstone scored two more in the sixth inning as Austin Hurt hit a sacrifice fly and George Cutler had an RBI single to advance the lead to 5-0.
- Michael Foster ended his start with five scoreless innings before the Warriors found the scoreboard in the sixth on an RBI single to make it 6-1.
- CU responded though to score two more in the seventh, highlighted by a Samuel Bussler RBI single to make it 8-1.
- Colin Schwartz ran into some trouble in the ninth for CU on the mound, giving up three runs but was able to seal the 8-4 game two victory for the Golden Eagles.
What's Next?
Cornerstone will host Aquinas tomorrow for the final regular season series of the year vs. Aquinas. The games will start at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
